Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Jared Verse, defensive end Braden Fiske and wide receiver/kick returner Jordan Whittington were selected to Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-Rookie Team. The Rams were the only team to have three selections.
Verse was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Rams, the team’s first pick in the opening round since Jared Goff in 2016.
Verse did not disappoint, winning PFWA’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award and earning a Pro Bowl selection with 4.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 18 QB hits, two pass deflections and two forced fumbles in the regular season. He also had two sacks, two QB hits, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the postseason. Verse is a finalist for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
Fiske, the Rams’ second-round pick from Verse’s same Florida State, joined him as a finalist for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Fiske led the Rams and all rookies with 8.5 sacks this season, to go along with 10 tackles for loss, 10 QB hits and two forced fumbles and recoveries. He added 1.5 more sacks in the postseason.
And finally, Whittington was chosen by the Rams in the sixth-round of the draft and was selected by PFWA as a kick returner. Whittington was named to the All-Rookie team for special teams, accumulating 453 return yards in the 2024 season, ranking 13th in the NFL and first among rookies. He averaged 28.3 yards per return.
This is a credit to the incredible work done by general manager Les Snead and company during the 2024 offseason. After losing Aaron Donald to retirement, they assumed it would be a rebuilding year for the defense. Instead, L.A. pieced together the cheapest defense in football full of scrappy rookies and turned them into a legitimate force.
The Rams defense tied the postseason record for sacks in a game with nine against the Minnesota Vikings in the Wils Card round. And that effort was in part led by Fiske. Verse was dominant in the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round.
Now, the Rams can continue building knowing the special group they drafted in 2024.
