The Los Angeles Rams have legit Super Bowl aspirations in 2025, although a lot of their hopes depend on the health of quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The 37-year-old is heading into his 17th NFL season, but age is just a number as he remains one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
With any quarterback that old though, health is always a concern and that is especially the case for Stafford right now as he missed all of training camp due to a back injury.
The good news is that Stafford is back at practice and all reports over the last week have been positive. He was on the practice field again on Monday and barring a setback, head coach Sean McVay said that the expectation is for Stafford to be ready for their Week 1 matchup with the Houston Texans, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:
McVay said Stafford has a “full participant” and been “really in everything” in practice and “feel good each of the next mornings” since returning last Monday.
“I can’t see into the future, but if you look at what the last week has entailed, feel really good,” McVay said. “There’s nothing that would leave me to believe, unless we have an unforeseen setback, that he’s not going to be ready to roll against the Texans.”
The Rams host the Texans on Sunday, Sept. 6, so Stafford has just under two weeks to be ready for a Houston defense that is one of the best in the league.
Even though Stafford has been back at practice, his status will be worth monitoring every day as back injuries can flare up at any time. The two-time Pro Bowler is as tough as they come though, so there’s no doubt he will do whatever he can to be on the field with his teammates in Week 1.
Matthew Stafford discusses return to practice
Matthew Stafford returned to Rams practice for the first time last week and he discussed how he felt getting in some much-needed reps.
“I think the first day, I wasn’t expecting to do as much as I did, and I felt pretty good, so I just kind of kept going,” Stafford said. “And coach was cool enough to let me kind of push myself. And he knows that I know myself and how I feel, and so he let me kind of go. And it felt like I hadn’t been out there in a while. Physically fine, but just seeing the defense operate and doing all this stuff, and it’s my third day, call it in a row, whatever that is, our third practice day of a four-day block, and definitely felt a whole lot more like myself out there today, and just want to continue to do everything I possibly can to be ready for the guys in the locker room.”
