Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will become a free agent after the latest playoff loss. The Los Angeles Rams season is over which means Garoppolo will likely head to the free agent market after spending just one season with the team since signing a one-year deal this past offseason. According to several reports, the Rams have several free agents but many of them could return since the team has more than $58 million in salary cap. They have a unique quarterback situation since starter Matthew Stafford is aging so they could probably think of life after him.
However, the team may not bring back Garoppolo since they could turn to this upcoming NFL Draft to select their new signal-caller. The bad news is that the Rams are not in the best position to select one this year considering all of the viable incoming quarterbacks will gone before the team makes their first-round selection. Head Coach Sean McVay does love Garoppolo but a return wouldn’t make sense for his situation. Originally selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the former two-time Super Bowl champion came into the league learning from Hall of Famer Tom Brady.
After a trade to the San Francisco 49ers, Garoppolo helped revive a team into a winning culture, guiding them to a Super Bowl appearance. However, he became a journeyman since injuries have been catching up to him, playing for the Raiders in 2023. Garoppolo could choose to test the market this offseason and teams like the Saints, Chiefs could take a chance on him.

Derek Carr Moving On?
The New Orleans Saints will need to get creative about their financial situation since the team won’t have enough resources to make several moves to improve their roster. General Manager Mickey Loomis does not plan to retire nor rebuild this organization since the post-Drew Brees era in 2020. The bad news is that Derek Carr does not want to take a pay cut but the team wants him back and will leave it up to the next head coach to decide on his future. Depending on who will become the next coach of the team, the Saints may release Carr to create some cap relief to potentially rebuild a roster from the ground up.
New Orleans has several free agents with uncertain futures, including Tyrann Mathieu and Cameron Jordan. They’ll likely head to free agency depending on what the Saints do, but the quarterback situation seems to be in the air for the roster. Perhaps, they could sign Garoppolo for a few years while rookie Spencer Rattler adjusts to the league. The Saints can’t expect Ratter to play a full season yet, especially with the mediocre performance he put up last season.
Backup for Mahomes
No one is taking Patrick Mahomes’ job for the next decade. Even though he had a mediocre season, there isn’t anyone capable of starting over him unless there’s an injury. However, after the DeAndre Hopkins trade, the Chiefs got better each game in the aerial attack. The last regular season game for Kansas City was an atrocious one since the team lost to the Denver Broncos with backup Carson Wentz under center.
He didn’t look like he improved at all during his time with the Chiefs since sitting as the backup for Mahomes. Wentz probably won’t play another down in the NFL so the team could be in the market for a backup. Perhaps, Garoppolo could spend a few more years under a superstar quarterback before earning a starting role with another team before he hangs up his cleats.
