How close is Sean McVay to becoming NFC West’s best head coach ever?
Sean McVay could clinch his fourth NFC West division title this weekend, which would be one shy of Chuck Knox’s franchise record. Knox won 5 division titles in 5 years as the Rams head coach from 1973-1977, and he reached the NFC Championship three times.
A division title would get McVay one step closer to his third NFC Championship appearance.
By comparison, Jeff Fisher was head coach of the Titans for 16 seasons and he only won three division titles.

Since 2002 realignment created the current NFC West, 4 division titles would tie for the second-most by a head coach of any team in the division:
- Pete Carroll, Mike Holmgren each won 5 NFC West titles with Seattle
- Kyle Shanahan has won 4 NFC West titles with San Francisco
- The Cardinals most titles was 2 by Ken Whisenhunt
- Mike Martz won 2 division titles with the Rams, but one was prior to realignment
If the Seahawks lose to the Chicago Bears on Thursday, the Rams will have all but clinched the NFC West title. A win over the Cardinals would guarantee it. If the Seahawks beat the Bears though, it appears that the division will come down to Seattle’s game game against L.A. at SoFi Stadium in Week 18.
And McVay has owned the Seattle Seahawks.
Since becoming the Rams head coach, McVay is 11-5 against the Seahawks, including playoffs. But several of those wins came when L.A. didn’t have its starting quarterback and Matthew Stafford has never lost to Seattle as the Rams quarterback.
