Jared Goff was selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and appeared to be their franchise quarterback for years to come.
However, that all changed after the 2020 season when the team sent Goff to the Detroit Lions in a blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford.
Goff revealed at the time that he did not have any contact with the Rams regarding his future until the deal was made. Head coach Sean McVay has gone on the record of saying he regrets how the team handled the situation.
Goff, who is featured in the new season of “Quarterback” on Netflix, criticized the Rams for their lack of communication regarding the trade, via Tanner Phifer of XPAND Sports:

While it’s unfortunate how things went down between Goff and the Rams, both sides seem to be thriving in their current situations.
Stafford of course won a Super Bowl in his first year with the Rams, and the team once again has high expectations going into the 2025 season.
Meanwhile, Goff has played the best of his football of his career with the Lions and has come close on several occasions of leading the team to their first Super Bowl.
Goff has faced the Rams three times since the trade, winning two of those matchups, including the 2024 NFC Wild Card Game. The 30-year-old became the first Lions quarterback to win a playoff game since Erik Kramer in 1991.
Jared Goff has no ill will toward Rams
Shortly after being traded to the Lions in 2021, Jared Goff said there was no bad blood between him and the Rams.
“I’m so thankful for my time there. I have so many great memories, made so many great friends, have so many great former teammates from there. And there’s so much I learned there,” Goff said.
“There’s no ill will. I want to move forward with my life and my career, and this is the next chapter — it starts today. But I had so many great times there and I’m thankful for everything that I went on there.
“We had a lot of success there. I was able to have a lot of success there. Like I mentioned, there were a lot of good times there. Unfortunately, the way it ended is never the way you envision it. But that’s the way it goes. The only constant is change in this league and it’s no different every offseason. It so happens this offseason, this is part of my change. I’m excited about it.”
