Jared Goff was a very good quarterback when he was with the Los Angeles Rams. As soon as Sean McVay was hired in 2017, Goff’s career got on track after a frustrating rookie season in 2016.
He helped take the Rams to the Super Bowl in just his third NFL season but after that impressive 2018 campaign, he began to regress slightly and was eventually traded to the Detroit Lions in 2021.
It’s a trade that has worked out for both teams, with Goff taking the Lions back to the playoffs and Matthew Stafford leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory, and it’s a trade that still gets talked about today.
Goff was recently on the “Trading Cards” podcast and he sounds very happy to be where he’s at now. He called the trade the best thing that could’ve happened for his career, both on the field and off it.
“In hindsight, (being traded to Detroit) was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, for my career and my development as a human,” Goff said, via the Detroit Free Press. “Being shipped off and being sent to a place to die, essentially, is what a lot of people think it was and I was never going to allow that to happen. I’m fortunate enough to be around a lot of good coaches and players in Detroit that support me and help me reach my potential.”
Goff fell out of favor in Los Angeles and his relationship with Sean McVay soured, leading to their split in 2021. They’ve seemingly put that rift behind them and are on good terms now, but Goff still has a chip on his shoulder after being shipped off to Detroit.
Both teams should be happy about the trades they made after seeing the success they’ve each had in the last three seasons, and both quarterbacks should feel the same way, too.
