It feels like a ghost town in Los Angeles as the Rams are dealing with quarterback Matthew Stafford nursing an injury that will receive an update this week. According to reports, a Rams spokesperson didn’t want to comment on whether Stafford was able to practice on Saturday or not, so it’s interesting to discuss how severe this injury could be. It’s not the vibe an NFL team wants unless they have something to hide, especially when Stafford has been dealing with a back problem. Despite that, the team has been confident that Stafford would return to the field to practice, but it doesn’t look like that will be the case anymore, as the quarterback is hoping to be playing by Week 1.
The biggest question is exactly what could they be hiding? There is now a lot of speculation and rumors that many journalists and reporters can comment on this situation, but it might be that the Rams could lose Stafford for the entire 2025 regular season. If that’s the case, it would be a huge blow to the quarterback unit, as Jimmy Garoppolo is the current backup for this roster. However, former 2023 draft pick Stetson Bennett has been impressing in the preseason this year.
They could give him some opportunities, but a trade for a quarterback seems likely in this situation. One report believes McVay could call up an old friend, Kirk Cousins, who hasn’t won a ring in his career, to come to Los Angeles and possibly put this team in the best spot to get there. Cousins is already a trade candidate with how his season went last year, losing his starting job to Michael Penix Jr., so here are the other three teams that might pursue the veteran before the Rams do.

Possible Next Teams
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints still have one of the worst quarterback units, even though Spencer Rattler is beating Tyler Shough in the competition. Since General Manager Mickey Loomis refuses to rebuild, they should trade for Cousins, who is hungry for a Super Bowl as long as he can stay consistent. The Saints are still figuring out their style of play under head coach Kellen Moore, so even if they don’t appear in the postseason, they could put themselves in the driver’s seat with Cousins under center.
Cleveland Browns
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns have five quarterbacks on the roster between Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and Kenny Pickett, but not all of them will be a Brown for much longer. While one will remain on the practice squad, they could trade one before the 2025 regular season. Flacco is trending down to retirement, so the team could swap with the Falcons and get Flacco while the Browns get Cousins.
Dallas Cowboys
This trade would make a lot of sense for several reasons. Quarterback Joe Milton hasn’t looked his best this preseason, so he could use the mentorship from Cousins while he develops as a reliable QB2 behind Dak Prescott. Cousins won’t start for the Cowboys anytime soon, but his name could be called up to start if they don’t see improvement from Prescott, or god forbid, another injury.
