Sean McVay spoke highly of NFL quaterback Jimmy Garoppolo, do fans agree?
Sean McVay said on Up and Adams with Kay Adams that he does consider Jimmy Garoppolo a starting quarterback in the NFL, and that belief makes McVay confident that “Jimmy G” can effectively step in for Matthew Stafford if Stafford were to miss any time, but do fans agree with McVay that the Rams have the best backup quarterback in the league?
When asked by Adams if McVay thought the Rams had, “the best backup quarterback in the league”, McVay said:
“I do…I look at Jimmy, he’s a starting quarterback, and so…what’s cool about that though is the respect and reverence he has for Matthew, and the way that Matthew leads that room…Jimmy has played at a really high level and he’s going into year 12, he’s got so many things to bring to the table, and we were really fortunate he chose to come back here cause he had a lot of other opportunities. There’s no doubt in my mind he is a starting quarterback in this league, and I think he’ll get a chance to be able to do that again…”
Despite any doubts, I think what McVay said about Jimmy G is fair
In their ideal world, the Rams would have their backup to Stafford who one day becomes the next franchise starter, but the Rams haven’t found any clear heir to the Stafford mantle, unless Garoppolo is that, and unless Stetson Bennett is better than any of us know.
As it stands, the future of their QB position is a question mark.
Now, there is nothing wrong with a game manager who wins, and I am of the opinion Garoppolo can be the game manager L.A. needs if Stafford is out, that said, he is a downgrade from Stafford, and that’s a fair concern. Though, successful NFL teams don’t need their backup QB to be as good as their starter, they need their backup to be competent enough to give their team a better chance at winning than losing.
He may not be their long-term answer, but Garoppolo should be able to do enough in a pinch
I am not sure there is a better veteran backup in the NFL than Garoppolo, I would say that he and Geno Smith are two of the better options at the position (maybe Kirk Cousins should be considered here too?) when it comes to being a backup/starting caliber veteran quarterback, and Smith is expected to start for the Las Vegas Raiders this year (funnily enough Jimmy G’s former team), so maybe Smith is better than Garoppolo? Though, I am not sold that I’d want Smith over Garoppolo for the Rams. Would you?
So, McVay may be right, that the Rams have the best backup/starting quarterback in the NFL, however:
- Do you agree with McVay that Jimmy G is the best backup the Rams could have right now?
- Do you think Jimmy G is a starter worthy QB in the league?
- Can Garoppolo do enough in place of Stafford if needed?
- Is there another backup in the league that you’d prefer over Garoppolo?
And don’t expect these articles to go away even if Stafford is healthy and suiting up to start the year, quarterback controversies and conversations never seem to end for most of the teams around the NFL, and the Rams even since adding Stafford and winning a Super Bowl, are no exception.
