Three Running Back Targets for the Chargers in the 2025 NFL Draft

January 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Chargers Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers running backs under contract in 2025 don’t inspire confidence. Gus Edwards is 30 years old and had 365 yards last year. Even worse, he’s the most productive back on the team as of now. Unless Kimani Vidal takes a step forward or J.K. Dobbins returns, the Chargers must address the running back position in the 2025 NFL draft. In a deep draft, there are plenty of options to look to, but here are the top three targets depending on how early they want to address the position.

Three Running Back Targets for the Chargers in the 2025 NFL Draft

Early Option – Quinshon Judkins, Ohio State

Judkins has the contact balance, ball security and vision to thrive at the next level. He would bring a physical mindset at the goal line for the team and has 45 touchdowns across three years in college. He’s not fooling anyone with long speed, but has enough that he can turn a ten yard run into a big play. Unfortunately, he’ll probably get caught from behind after a sprint. In the second or if they trade back to the third round, Judkins can be the hammer for this offense for years to come.

Judkins can be the 1a for the offense, but would need a running mate to take some of the third down work. Maybe that option is already on the offense, or maybe they look to a Jaylen Warren – type back in free agency.

Mid-Tier Option – Dylan Sampson, Tennessee

Another burner from Knoxville, Dylan Sampson was stuck behind some NFL talent the past couple years. He stole touches away from Jaylen Wright before he went to Miami, and was even getting touches as a true freshman in the same system. He’ll shoot up mock drafts once people catch on to his athleticism, but he’s a great choice in the late third or early fourth round of this year’s draft.

Sampson can handle all three downs, but the stark difference between his rushing style and Gus Edwards would be killer. A strong, pounding back without a lot of speed can wear down defenders, while Sampson comes in to make defenders chase him all over the field. He’ll need to improve on his receiving game work to get the most out of him, but the physical tools are enticing to add to the Chargers offense.

Day Three Sleeper Option – Kyle Monangai, Rutgers

Monangai became a popular name in 2025 NFL draft circles due to his strong rushing power and willingness to finish runs, which matches well with what the Chargers want to do. He’s not the flashiest of players, but he can be a discount thumper to bring a little power to this offense. With Kimani Vidal able to hopefully move into some third down work, Monangai would be the hammer for the between the 20s rushing and goal line situations.

While he’s not the most exciting player, Monangai was the picture of consistency for Rutgers. He has back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons, and was the focal point of their offense in each. He wouldn’t receive the same volume in Los Angeles unless they leave the position completely alone in the offseason, but he can be a valuable part of this offense for years to come.
