“They Would Have to Use Me Right” – 9,500-Yard Veteran Open to Returning to Cowboys

March 10, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

brandin cooks returning cowboys

Journeyman veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks is only open to returning to the Dallas Cowboys in the right situation. According to a report, Cooks is a free agent for the first time in his career after being a trade candidate four times. He’s expecting a good free agency but given his age, it might not turn out the way he wants. However, the bad news for the Cowboys is that Cooks will only return if the team gives him more opportunities in the aerial attack.

It’s a perfect way of saying “I want to come back but there are other options for me out there.” There hasn’t been word on the Cowboys wanting Cooks back as they have several offseason moves to make. This would include Micah Parsons’ contract after restructuring CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott’s contract. However, the team is looking for a legitimate WR2 to pair with Lamb and while they tendered KaVontae Turpin, Cooks might have played his last game with the team last season.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the former Oregon State product had some solid moments throughout his seasons with the Cowboys. However, it all came to a disappointing end as the team didn’t have Cooks for some of the 2024 campaign with an injury. Cooks is aging and he wants to win so these three suitors could emerge.

More Weapons for Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers need a wide receiver in the worst way possible. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is the only consistent weapon for quarterback Justin Herbert so they need all the wideouts they could get. Head coach Jim Harbaugh loves winning football games with a physical run game but when you share a competitive AFC division, it’s best for Herbert to fling it in the air. Quentin Johnston hasn’t been able to live up to expectations in the deep attack while Joshua Palmer is a free agent.

The Chargers will probably draft a wide receiver but they need a proven weapon. Cooks isn’t in his prime anymore and won’t achieve 1,000 yards but he could wind up being Herbert’s consistent wideout that will probably be used correctly.

Other Fits

For the Ravens, the team could be in the market for another veteran wideout to help at least for a season behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson knows how to get the best out of a weapon in the aerial attack that could achieve greatness. Since Nelson Agholor is a free agent, he might’ve bought out his expiring deal and could look to join another team to win a Championship. Meanwhile, Cooks isn’t the permanent solution but he could have the same result as Agholor if the Ravens are looking to add experience.

After the recent incident for Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs should be in business to add another capable wide receiver in the backend of the depth chart. The good news is that they’re bringing back Marquise Brown on a one-year deal but they might not have any money left after extending linebacker Nick Bolton. However, they could sign Cooks for a bargain if the team doesn’t retain DeAndre Hopkins this offseason.
