Texans Star Receiver Likely Leaving After Latest Playoff Loss – Chargers, Saints Possible Next Teams

January 19, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

stefon diggs free agent

Texans star wide receiver Stefon Diggs will become a free agent this offseason after the Texans’ latest playoff loss. After trading for him this past offseason, the Houston Texans made sure to construct a reliable roster for quarterback C.J. Stroud but it wasn’t enough to get them past the Divisional Round of the playoffs. This will leave the Texans with some tough decisions to make as the salary cap implications are not in their favor, which means several free agents may not come back including Diggs. Since the trade acquisition, the Texans made a surprising move to void the final three years in his original contract which will make him a free agent in March.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product became a full-time starter with the Minnesota Vikings becoming effective in the aerial attack alongside veteran Adam Thielen. Since the Tank Dell’s brutal season-ending injury, the Texans might have no choice but to rebuild this roster for Stroud to keep the offense sustainable. Before Diggs’ injury, he was on pace to become a reliable playmaker, recording a team-leading 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns. Despite that, the 31-year-old should have a market where many teams may pursue him in free agency.

A short-term “prove-it” type deal will be efficient enough for the wideout to revitalize his career before he can earn himself a big-time contract. However, two teams should be interested in his services.

New Weapon for Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers have a promising roster that could go farther into the postseason next year but that will only happen if head coach Jim Harbaugh prioritizes the pass game. He loves the ground game but now he should understand why they’ve given quarterback Justin Herbert a “disservice” this past season. Considering wide receiver Quentin Johnston has been inconsistent, the Chargers may trade him while he’s young and bring in a couple of veterans to help Herbert win a Super Bowl ring. The team must understand Herbert isn’t getting any younger so they have to equip him with the best superstar weapons while he is thriving with his strong arm.

Rookie Ladd McConkey has done handsomely well the entire 2024 campaign so pairing a deep-threat wideout like Stefon Diggs could help improve the momentum of this offense. The bad news is that Joshua Palmer will become a free agent in March, he was a solid option so they might want to bring him back on a one-year deal as a WR3 to see what he does. However, no matter the occasion, the Chargers could be in serious business if sign Diggs to a contract.

Piggy Bank Time

The Saints came into the season with just two reliable wideouts Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, since losing them this past campaign, only one wideout will probably return to the team. There’s no word on what Olave will do but he’ll likely be in a new uniform if the Saints do not desire to bring him back. Despite that, the Saints will be in the market for new weapons for whoever will be the starting quarterback. The bad news about that is the team doesn’t have the financial freedom to sign Diggs.

However, they could get creative in this situation and bring in Diggs. The Saints were solid with signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling as emergency depth but it wasn’t enough to bring in wins since the entire roster was injured. Perhaps, the team signing Diggs could be the new step in the right direction to help this team back in the postseason next year.
