Superstar Wideout Named Trade Candidate After Disaster Season – Chargers, Ravens Possible Partners?

January 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Superstar wideout DK Metcalf could be a potential trade candidate after a disastrous season this upcoming offseason. According to Pro Football Focus, the veteran had a low grade of 75.0, the lowest since his rookie year, so the Seattle Seahawks might move on. The team had one of the more disappointing years despite going 10-7 and while fans can blame Metcalf for the roster’s faults, he hasn’t been the same athlete in recent memory. Originally selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the wide receiver spent the entirety with the Seahawks but that may change as he enters the final year of his contract.

It shouldn’t be surprising if he decides to request a trade depending on how he feels regarding his future. Metcalf could demand a contract extension which may complicate this offseason considering they need to bring back guys like Geno Smith, Kenneth Walker and Ernest Jones. They might become the highest priorities, especially when breakout star Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been outperforming him. This might motivate the Seahawks to move on since they do have a new head coach but what the team will likely do is ask Metcalf to take a pay cut.

However, chances are, this will probably run Metcalf the wrong way which could lead to a standoff in contract talks. While everything seems hypothetical with the postseason around the corner, it looks more likely Metcalf will be in a new uniform in the Fall. Metcalf might have to sign a “prove it” deal with the Chargers, Ravens to revitalize his career.

More Lightning Power

The Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in the postseason despite the lack of pass catchers for MVP quarterback Justin Herbert. Rookie Ladd McConkey is probably the only dependable receiver who is worth sticking around after proving he could be an efficient weapon for the Chargers passing game. However, second-year Quentin Johnston could look for improvement even though he has a few bright spots but chances are, the Chargers will be looking for a new wide receiver this upcoming free agency. They were looking for a superstar to help Herbert feel comfortable in the aerial attack but they had to settle for Jalen Reagor.

Despite that, most of their success came from their pass defense stepping in stride to give Herbert more chances on the field. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh may want to win ball games on the ground but with a competitive AFC, they can’t afford to depend on J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards for the majority of their snaps given their injury history. Metcalf could easily become the top receiving option for Herbert while McConkey takes care of getting open in the slot.

Extra Help For Lamar Jackson

Meanwhile, the bad news for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore offense, they’ll likely be without Zay Flowers for at least the first game in the postseason. However, they can’t sign Metcalf until the season is over and if he becomes available. The Ravens will still need to find a new reliable playmaker that can replicate the success that Flowers and Rashod Bateman have been laying out all on the field. Nelson Agholor is aging and there is no sign he’ll be a part of Baltimore’s long-term plans.

This means the team will likely draft a new wideout but they should find a new superstar like Metcalf to help balance the passing game for Jackson to accommodate Flowers in the deep threat.
