Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much luck in the league for quarterbacks as free agent Trey Lance is still available on the market. However, after the recent Cooper Rush signing with the Baltimore Ravens, there could be some type of interest soon from teams this offseason. While Lance is struggling to find a new opportunity, it might not be the end of his NFL career as several rosters are looking for a new quarterback but Lance may have to settle for a backup job. Originally selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former North Dakota State product should be picking up steam in the coming days as long as Aaron Rogers and Russell Wilson sign and pick their teams sooner rather than later.
Lance is no “surefire” starter but he still provides a lot of upside for any team willing to give him a legitimate shot. In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys made the move to trade for him but never really gave him a real opportunity as he stuck around as the third-string quarterback behind Rush for the past two seasons. The tools that Lance provides won’t be disappearing anytime soon as the signal-caller isn’t turning mid-age until May. Lance has a high ceiling with any team in the league as long as he can get a shot as a backup.

Potential Destinations
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens may have got Cooper Rush this free agency but it doesn’t mean the team shouldn’t get another quarterback. Rush and Trey Lance kept the Cowboys intact for the majority of the 2024 campaign and they could be a key asset behind Lamar Jackson. This could be Lance’s opportunity to beat out Rush for the potential backup job as Baltimore has the same style that fits Lance.
Washington Commanders
To no surprise, the Washington Commanders are bringing back Marcus Mariota on another one-year deal. He was a solid support system for Jayden Daniels’ rookie year but this could be Mariota’s last season with Washington as he will likely earn a potential starting opportunity elsewhere in 2026. Trey Lance reuniting with Dan Quinn makes sense and he could be a key contributor for the offense.
Carolina Panthers
For the Panthers, the team finally has their faith in quarterback Bryce Young despite benching him earlier last year in favor of Andy Dalton. However, Young came back into the lineup and even though he’s the starter, there’s no guarantee that head coach Dave Canales won’t bench him again. Dalton is returning again as the backup but they might benefit from Lance starting to get them back in the wild card if Young underperforms again.
New Orleans Saints
This might be the best likely scenario for Trey Lance. The New Orleans Saints fans were not happy to hear that quarterback Derek Carr is back. Spencer Rattler is their only dependable option but he’s still developing. Perhaps, the Saints should take the route of giving Lance a shot if they bench Carr.
Los Angeles Chargers
Even though the Chargers are re-signing Taylor Heinicke, it’s never a bad idea to get another quarterback. Jim Harbaugh believes in Justin Herbert and says he’s one of the greatest to do it. However, they shouldn’t stray away from getting Lance in the mix.
