Report: Former Cowboys Draft Bust Named Cut Candidate – 4 Suitors Emerge

July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After spending the last three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, the team could cut linebacker Damone Clark after having one of the worst campaigns last year. According to a report, the Cowboys will likely release Clark before the 2025 regular season since he hasn’t been able to be productive. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former LSU product didn’t have a strong rookie season to start off his journey in the league after coming off a spinal fusion surgery during that campaign, but later came back in October. Clark has been playing in a situational role for most of his career, and the road doesn’t look to get easier for the linebacker, who now has competition in the linebacker unit.

Between Marist Liufau, Jack Sanborn, Kenneth Murray Jr., Shemar James and the return of DeMarvion Overshown, it doesn’t look promising for Clark since the Cowboys not only revamped their pass-rushing department but hired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who will install his philosophy in this roster. Clark might find himself as the odd man out, as the Cowboys will only save about $3.3 million, which isn’t much, but they could use that money to find a cheaper veteran if they want. If the Cowboys decide to cut Clark, here are four teams who might take a chance on him at least in a backup role.

Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

After losing Malik Harrison this offseason, the Baltimore Ravens should at least invest in another linebacker to help David Ojabo and Trenton Simpson. These two athletes had a hard time adjusting to this defense that was supposed to do well without Jadeveon Clowney and Patrick Queen. However, it hasn’t been working that way, and it doesn’t help the long-term of this unit that Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy are entering the final year of their contracts. The Ravens might not get much out of Clark in the first season, but the culture always knows how to reignite an athlete’s career in the right situation.

Perhaps, Clark needs a hard reset, and the Ravens could be the team to do that to recalibrate this defense. Baltimore didn’t have the same pass-rushing unit last season, so maybe Clark could somehow save this unit in a situational role.

Kansas City Chiefs

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are getting younger at the linebacker position. Despite extending Nick Bolton, the Chiefs are hopeful that Drue Tranquill and Leo Chenal can step up, or else Jack Cochrane may take over as the starter alongside Bolton. Either way, they will need a safe, cheap backup option, and Clark could fill that hole.

Los Angeles Chargers

After releasing Joey Bosa, the Los Angeles Chargers have one of the weakest linebacker units in the league. Khalil Mack is still at his peak, but he isn’t a god and is aging. Despite extending Bud Dupree, they should continue to bolster that unit by adding Clark in the mix.

Washington Commanders

Just like the Chargers, the Commanders have a weak point in their linebacker room. Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner are solid contributors in that unit, while Dominique Hampton is unproven. Clark won’t start, but it’s never too early to strengthen this defense if the Commanders want to win a Super Bowl one day, and it will have to take both sides of the ball.
