After making several moves on offense this offseason, the Washington Commanders could look to trade for tight end Cole Kmet during the 2025 campaign. According to Bleacher Report, the source believes the Commanders could be a fit for Kmet as they have an aging tight end in Zach Ertz as the only reliable pass-catcher in that unit. Former 2024 draft pick Ben Sinnott hasn’t lived up to expectations so far, and even though it’s still early, the Commanders could trade for Kmet to give Ertz some stability as a backup. Ertz signed a one-year contract this offseason, so he might retire after the 2025 regular season is over, and Kmet could easily emerge as the Commanders’ top tight end option for quarterback Jayden Daniels.
While the Commanders did re-sign backup John Bates, arguably one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, he isn’t the greatest at being another pass-catcher for Daniels’ aerial attack. With Chicago taking tight end Colston Loveland in the first round this past draft, the Bears are most obviously looking to move on from Kmet at some capacity as they’re continuing to rebuild an offense that works for Caleb Williams. Kmet won’t be receiving interest just from the Commanders this season, as there will be plenty of teams out there keeping tabs on him. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame product could be in a new uniform with these three suitors.

Other Possible Fits
Los Angeles Chargers
Why not? The Los Angeles Chargers might have one of the most mediocre pass-catching groups in the league, other than Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen. The team invested in tight end Tyler Conklin, knowing that quarterback Justin Herbert thrives on slinging it in the air to his tight ends. Between him and Will Dissly, the Chargers’ offense should be in good business when you put Kmet in the mix. There is no better fit for Kmet.
Even though he might not get most of the attention with the Chargers, he could turn into a reliable threat for this offense against opposing defenses in the right moments.
New Orleans Saints
After a long period of mediocrity of not adding talent, the New Orleans Saints are finally bringing in DeVaughn Vele through a trade and claiming Trey Palmer off waivers. They now have two versatile wide receivers behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, the same can’t be said about the depth of this tight end group. With Juwan Johnson still developing into a full-time starter in the league, the Saints might be better off getting a guy like Kmet, who can fire up the tight end unit immediately.
When you have a quarterback like Spencer Rattler, who has a ton of momentum, it’s always best to keep adding onto it.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Meanwhile, the Jaguars spent most of their offseason reshaping the wide receiver core group for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Following the release of Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram, the Jaguars are taking a step back to improve the offense. With Brenton Strange having a daunting task of filling the former starter’s shoes, the Jaguars should trade for Kmet if he can’t live up to the moment.
