The Chargers fell to the Rams in the third preseason game of the year, 23-22.
The Chargers showed in the game that the team will be a lot better this season. The Chargers had one of their key players injured during the game.
Wide Receiver Quentin Johnston suffered an injury at the beginning of the game against the Rams on Saturday night.
Takeaways From the Game
The turning point in the game came when the Chargers were down by 2 as the team headed into the final quarter. Rookie receiver Luke Grimm helped the Chargers pull right back in the game when he returned a punt 66 yards for a Charger touchdown. Grimm, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas, had 177 career college catches for 2,472 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Another key play from the game was the Defense showing up again in the preseason. The Chargers defense took the field with a five-point lead and forced their first takeaway of the game. Though at the end, the Rams scored the go-ahead touchdown with five seconds left in regulation to get a win against the Chargers.
Top Play
One of the top plays that stood out the most in the Chargers’ third preseason game was how Tre Harris continues to show why he wants to make the team. The Chargers’ rookie wide receiver had his best performance so far this preseason, hauling in six catches for 85 yards. Harris also had a 34-yard gain during the game against the Rams, and according to NFL Next Gen Stats, that completion had a probability of just 14.4 percent.
Final thoughts of the Chargers’ preseason are that the team is coming together, and Jim Harbaugh really likes what he is seeing from his team so far in the preseason.
The Chargers’ defense, in particular, has gotten so much better than last year, and defense will be a key factor heading into the regular season.
