The Chargers opened the 2025 preseason with a win against the Detroit Lions.
The Chargers dominated the game against the Detroit Lions, winning 34-7.
The Chargers rolled out to a 14-0 lead, which was thanks to three first-half takeaways, thanks to both the offense and the defense stepping up.
The Chargers set the tone early in the game, which was the opening kickoff. The Chargers won the coin toss and then kicked off, as the team chose to receive the ball in the 2nd half. Chargers linebacker Caleb Murphy forced a fumble on the game’s first play that was recovered by Chargers safety Kendall Williamson. The Chargers took over on the Lions’ 28-yard line and only took five plays for the team to get the first score of the year from new Chargers QB Trey Lance.
Trey Lance, who is likely to back up Justin Herbert, found Dissly for a 5-yard touchdown catch.
One big moment came from the Chargers, as did Nikko Reed, an undrafted free agent.
Nikko Reed has been one of the most impressive rookies so far in Chargers training camp, and had some big plays last week in the win against the Detroit Lions.

Nikko Reed had an interception in the game against the Lions on Detroit’s second possession on offense. Reed returned the interception for a 60-yard touchdown to the Lions’ 6-yard line. Nikko Reed also had a couple of tackles in the game against Detroit last week. Chargers fans should keep a good eye on Nikko Reed the rest of training camp and the preseason.
The Chargers, under second-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, are finally coming together as a cohesive team. Though it was only 1 preseason game and training camp was going on, the Chargers have lots of pieces lined up for the team to make another postseason run! From the defense with Tony Jefferson and Nikko Reed’s interceptions, the defense is much improved. The Chargers’ offense has also gotten better.
This Chargers team will look to battle Kansas City for the top spot in the AFC West.
