The Los Angeles Chargers will probably lose journeyman free agent Teair Tart this offseason as the team has enough cap space for upgrades. According to Pro Football Focus, Tart will continue to bounce around teams on one-year contracts so this means the team will probably move on. Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 2020, the Tennessee Titans took a chance on him but faced a few violations for unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct. Tart had his issues and antics on the team so the Titans decided to release him in 2023 after it was affecting the team and became more of a journeyman after that. The former FIU product had one of the best seasons with the Chargers last season pairing with another defensive lineman who was on a one-year contract, Poona Ford.
However, all things could come to an end early since Tart isn’t the biggest name for the defensive free agency market. The Chargers will probably target a more consistent lineman who could become a potential start like Myles Garrett, Jonathan Allen, etc. This doesn’t mean the Chargers didn’t like Tart at all last season but Ford has a better chance of landing a new deal with the team. With that, Tart could sign a two-year investment deal with these three teams since PFF believes he’s worthy of that kind of contract.
PFF: Chargers Expected to Lose Journeyman Free Agent Teair Tart
Three Suitors Emerge
Dallas Cowboys
Last offseason, the Dallas Cowboys were looking into a free agent like Teair Tart to give some life to the pass rush. Meanwhile, the team had one of the worst run defenses again this past year but that could’ve been avoidable if they had more reliable bodies after losing Demarvion Overshown with another injury. Since Demarcus Lawrence will probably sign elsewhere, it’s worth an investment for the Cowboys if Tart is available near the beginning of the preseason.
A tart move to Dallas is more realistic and could be a fine complementary piece for Osa Odighizuwa in his latest extension. Tart isn’t going to get more than five sacks but he’s a dependable lineman piece as long as nobody else bites to sign him before Dallas does.
Baltimore Ravens
Realistically, the Baltimore Ravens are the same as the Cowboys in their salary cap situation. Last offseason, they faced numerous challenges after losing Jadeveon Clowney and Geno Stone which heavily affected the defensive run game. After bringing in Yannick Ngakoue on a temporary bargain, Nmadi Madubuike was struggling to keep the Ravens on balance while Kyle Van Noy and Roquan Smith did what they could to ram the holes. Tart isn’t the hottest name but Baltimore could take on the red flag to open the gaps alongside Broderick Washington and Travis Jones.
New Orleans Saints
Meanwhile, the Saints need the low-investment bargain free agents to make up for their potential cuts and losses to save their salary cap. Chase Young will be in a new uniform and Cameron Jordan will likely be on the verge of a cut. Bryan Bresee is still developing so he could use someone like Tart to improve the defensive pass rush as a rotator.
