Mike Williams Injury Could Lead to Another Chargers Reunion

July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Los Angeles Chargers signed Mike Williams to a cheap one-year deal earlier in the offseason, but the former first-round pick is currently battling an injury and will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Even before this setback, the Chargers had a weak wide receiver room that could have benefited from another body. Now, if Williams is sidelined for a while, the team should consider calling up old friend Keenan Allen.

Chargers Could Sign Keenan Allen Following Mike Williams Injury

Head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to win football games with a strong rushing attack and a strong, physical defense, but he needs someone to help carry the passing attack. Ladd McConkey is great, but the rest of the depth chart is comprised of unknown rookies and unremarkable veterans.

Keenan Allen is probably the best veteran free agent remaining on the market, and his experience with Justin Herbert only increases his value to the team. Last year with the Chicago Bears, Allen recorded a respectable 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s not the player he once was, but he could easily be the second or third option in this passing attack.

Even before the injury, Mike Williams probably wouldn’t have done much for the Chargers. Cut prior to the 2024 season due to his inflated cap number, the veteran spent the previous season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. During his 18 games of action, the wideout finished with just 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown. He looked like a shell of himself and he probably wouldn’t improve too dramatically in his age-31 season. Now that he’s sidelined, the Chargers must pursue Keenan Allen if they want to compete in what might be the NFL’s most competitive division.
