Khalil Mack recorded 31 sacks over the past three seasons with the Chargers.
Following the Chargers’ loss to the Texans in this year’s wild card round, veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack was mum on using any “definitive language” in regards to his future plans, whether that be playing in 2025 (and beyond) or retirement.
After taking the past 10 days to mull it over and discuss with his family, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday morning that Mack has officially decided to play during the 2025 season. It’s undetermined if that will be with the Chargers or elsewhere as Mack is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this March. He will also turn 34 years old in February.
Nine-time Pro-Bowl LB Khalil Mack, who said after the Chargers’ postseason loss to the Texans that he needed to take some time to mull his future, will indeed play in the 2025 season, per source. Mack’s contract is up and he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. pic.twitter.com/qa8WrbKiJY

Mack recorded 31 total sacks in three seasons with the Chargers, highlighted by a career-high 17 during the 2023 season. He was elected to the Pro Bowl following each of those campaigns.
During Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh’s end-of-year presser, both spoke at length at how badly they want Mack back with the Chargers in 2025. Even at his advanced age, they know just how impactful he still is on the field and that his off-field presence is still invaluable to everyone in the building.
Still, it will be up to Mack to decide where he wants to (likely) take his last go-round. Will it be with the Chargers, a team he knows inside and out? Or will he take his chances elsewhere in pursuit of his first playoff victory?
We’ll unfortunately have to wait and find out.
