The Chargers, who dominated at home on primetime on Sunday night against the Steelers, weren’t the only headlines from that game; all eyes were on Keenan Allen, who just became the Chargers’ all-time leader in receptions.
With catch number 956, Keenan Allen passed former Charger teammate, now Hall of Famer, Antonio Gates on the all-time receptions list.
Keenan Allen said after the game:
“Hey, can we just do a speed here or something?”
Keenan Allen said that it was the easiest catch he got during the game on Sunday. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Keenan Allen’s family was there to witness history.
“He’s got family here and wanted to do it in front of the home crowd.”
After the Chargers recovered an onside kick, Chargers QB Justin Herbert took the snap and dropped the perfect pass off for Keenan Allen to get him in the Chargers’ history books.
Keenan Allen passed Antonio Gates, who racked up 955 career catches with the Chargers during his 16-year Hall of Fame career. Keenan Allen hit that mark in 87 fewer games. For Keenan Allen, it’s been an eventful and amazing return for him now that he’s back with the Chargers after going to Chicago last season.
Keenan Allen recorded his 1,000th career catch earlier this season, and he also recently joined the exclusive 40-40 club as the only player in NFL history with at least 400 catches from two different QBs.
“These are milestones that not a lot of people reach,” Keenan Allen said after the win against the Steelers on Sunday night.
Keenan Allen mentioned Gates and Philip Rivers for helping him get to where he’s at in his career.
With the win, the Chargers improve to 7-3 on the year, are in a good spot in the AFC Playoff picture, and remain 2nd in the AFC West behind the Denver Broncos.
