Chargers QB Justin Herbert underwent surgery on his fractured left hand on Monday.
Herbert is currently listed as day-to-day according to team officials.
The Chargers are hoping he is fine and able to play against the Eagles this week.
Herbert was hurt in Sunday’s win over the visiting Raiders in Week 13. After the game, Justin Herbert spoke to the media, saying that “he was preparing like he’d be playing against Philadelphia. Herbert’s injury happened back in the first quarter of the game against the Raiders.
Justin Herbert said the most challenging part of Sunday’s game, besides the injury, was continuing to compete and holding onto the football. The Chargers played the remainder of the game out of shotgun and pistol formation. Chargers head Coach Jim Harbaugh says that the team will get backup QB Trey Lance ready this week if necessary.
Justin Herbert takes all of the team’s first-team reps, though Harbaugh said Lance will get some time with the starters in those specific packages.
“That’ll be the point of emphasis this week,” Harbaugh said to the media on Monday.
Harbaugh was also amazed at Herbert’s ability to play through the injury.
Two seasons ago, Herbert suffered a similar injury to this one, fracturing his middle finger on his left hand; that game was also against the Raiders.
Justin Herbert said to the media:
“I think in terms of experience, I’ve gone through similar things, and so I think it’ll be helpful.”
As the team looks to aim for another postseason berth, Justin Herbert’s injury comes at the most crucial time of the NFL season.
With less than three weeks left of the season and some teams still fighting for a playoff spot, anything can still change in the coming weeks.
