“It Is On The Table” – Patriots Could Cut Four-Time Pro Bowler?

June 2, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After the latest boat controversy, there’s a chance that the New England Patriots could cut four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs, despite signing him this offseason. The Patriots made a huge financial commitment in the wideout even though he’s coming off rehabbing a torn ACL that ended his lone 2024 campaign with the Houston Texans. However, Patriots radio announcer Scott Zolak made a bold claim that the team could be releasing Diggs in the next few days. The chances of that happening are slim since they just signed him months ago, and they have a clause in their contract that they could release him after one season if he doesn’t perform up to standards.

Indeed, it would make sense to keep Diggs since quarterback Drake Maye has yet to have a true WR1 in their unit, so anything is possible. Kendrick Bourne could easily continue to take on the role, but he’s been the subject of trade rumors ever since signing Diggs. To play devil’s advocate, the Diggs’ storyline will be something to follow as head coach Mike Vrabel declined to make a huge comment, so releasing the wide receiver during the 2025 season isn’t entirely impossible. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product became one of the league’s best pass-catchers with the Minnesota Vikings, playing alongside veteran Adam Thielen.

Diggs got himself a three-year deal either way to prove he can be a solid contributor and possibly rejuvenate his career. Should the Patriots release the wide receiver, he would have a market from these three teams.

Patriots Could Cut Four-Time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs? – 3 Suitors Emerge

Possible Destinations

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars finally have two true wide receivers in 2025 draft pick Travis Hunter and last year’s draft signee Brian Thomas Jr. for Trevor Lawrence’s offense. However, they’re lacking another dynamic playmaker to help this roster feel complete. The Jaguars are getting younger after releasing Evan Engram and Gabe Davis this offseason, so they need some type of veteran to solidify the pass-catching department. The Patriots will never trade Diggs to the AFC, but if he becomes available in free agency, he should attract Jacksonville, as he was one of the several teams that were interested in the wide receiver.

Diggs might not have the same star power to be a WR1 anymore, so they should keep it safe and play in the slot behind Hunter and Thomas.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, this would have been the perfect fit before Diggs signed with the Patriots. The Los Angeles Chargers have one of the weakest wide receiver units in the league. Quentin Johnston is on the verge of being cut this season if he doesn’t have a breakout year. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is the only dependable target for quarterback Justin Herbert after having an impressive rookie campaign.

Veteran Mike Williams won’t single-handedly bring out his old nostalgic self and save this team. Diggs might not do the same either, depending on his consistency, but he could bring some type of life to this unit.

Kansas City Chiefs

However, the Kansas City Chiefs will likely be in the market for a wide receiver when the 2025 season is over. Last year, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was struggling to connect with his targets for the majority of the campaign. Marquise Brown is coming back on a one-year deal, but this might be his last season in Kansas City. Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice are the obvious long-term weapons for the Chiefs, barring anymore offseason legal trouble.

The Chiefs know how to handle drama during the offseason, and Diggs could fit as a WR3 at best on this roster.
