Giants Could Trade Former Third Rounder Due to Reduced Role

September 18, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Since the New York Giants are 0-2, the team might be willing to trade running back Devin Singletary. After drafting Cam Skattebo this year, there was talk about what this means for the future of Singletary in this backfield unit. However, Singletary may have gotten a start as a backup ahead of Tyrone Tracy Jr., but he is still buried in the depth chart as the No. 3 running back. If the Giants find themselves out of the playoff picture early, then they might as well trade him to garner some draft capital to build around rookie Jaxson Dart.

Yes, veteran Russell Wilson is the starter, but Dart is easily the future of this offense, especially with his recent performance this past preseason. With that, it shouldn’t be surprising if the Giants made Singletary available for a trade since releasing him wouldn’t help their salary cap. Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Florida Atlantic product became a promising running back in the league after having three successful and productive seasons with the Buffalo Bills to start his career. Due to James Cook’s emergence in Buffalo’s backfield, there wasn’t any room for the Bills to keep him anymore, so Singletary spent one year with the Texans and was hoping to stay as the Giants’ running back for the long term.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out that way, and he could soon be on the move again.

Possible Next Teams

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are better than their 0-2 record, but they need to improve their running back position. Isiah Pacheco is still an adequate runner, but they need someone who’s going to catch the dump-off passes. While they do have veteran Kareem Hunt to help Pacheco in running situations, they have an untested Elijah Mitchell on their roster. They did draft Brashard Smith with the sixth-round pick this year, but he won’t be getting most of the attention this year, especially if he does go through growing pains as a rookie.

If things transition smoothly for Smith in the future, they will still need a capable long-term backup. Hunt might be on the brink of retirement, and Mitchell is signed for under a year. Singletary joining the Chiefs could put him in the right situation to succeed.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have one of the best running back units in the league. Between veteran Najee Harris and 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton, head coach Jim Harbaugh is truly turning this offense into a run-based playbook for Justin Herbert. While Hampton is going through growing pains, the Chargers’ run game could use one last boost from Singletary to increase their chances of moving further in the postseason. They need someone to serve as a pass-catching running back, and Singletary could be the perfect fit for it.

Baltimore Ravens

However, the Baltimore Ravens have one of the best running backs in the league. Despite that, Derrick Henry is getting older, and it could be two-three years from now that he is no longer in his prime. Keaton Mitchell hasn’t shown enough consistency to be a prominent starter one day, but the presence of Singletary could change things and make the transition easier for Baltimore.
