Former first-round draft bust cornerback, Emmanuel Forbes is now on the free agent market and five top teams could clear him off waivers. According to multiple reports, the Washington Commanders are officially moving on from the former 2023 NFL Draft day one pick since drafting him out of Mississippi State. New coaches and personnel taking over this year did not have the same vision for Forbes since the team traded for Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. It’s no surprise of his release since he was garnering trade interest before this year’s deadline but he’s free to sign with whatever team he wants.
In his rookie year, he couldn’t get more than one interception after recording 10 passes defended. Forbes hasn’t been able to stay healthy this year after missing six games over the past 12 matchups. The Commanders fell in the NFC East after losing three straight matchups while Forbes was going to be a building block for the team’s secondary. Dan Quinn couldn’t bring out any talent out of him or production so they had no choice but to release him. Forbes isn’t a proven MVP or high-level talent but a new scenery could be what he needs to revitalize his career.
Former First Round Draft Bust Emmanuel Forbes Now On Free Agent Market – 5 Potential Destinations
Possible Fits
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens have yet to be excelling in their secondary game despite having a ferocious pass-rushing unit after departing with several key free agents. While Nate Wiggins is adjusting to NFL life, guys like Marcus Williams and Kyle Hamilton have been allowing too many plays to happen. Marlon Humphrey is still their top cornerback, there’s no word on whether Tre’Davious White will be available for the postseason. John Harbaugh elevated Ar’Darius Washington in hopes to improve the pass defense but they could take on a flier like Forbes in rotation to see what he could.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are probably one of the worst 11-1 teams in recent memory. They have yet to address the cornerback position since trading L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans this past offseason despite trying to get Lattimore before this year’s trade deadline. Trent McDuffie remains to hold the airfield but they might have to settle for someone like Forbes. The former first-rounder doesn’t need to start full-time but his addition could give some upside to this team’s secondary.
New Orleans Saints
If any NFL team is having a secondary crisis, it’s the New Orleans Saints. After losing Lattimore in trade and Paulson Adebo to injury, they might as well start their rebuilding journey with Forbes. It wouldn’t hurt for the Saints to bring him in to redevelop him as the secondary coaching staff have been prone to bring out success in young talent which may be suitable for Forbes. While he has his struggles, he’s their next-best option since a cornerback like Xavien Howard who is looking to play for a contender is out of the question.
Los Angeles Chargers
After putting Alohi Gilman on IR, the Chargers may have to bring in someone like Forbes to reinvigorate the secondary. Forbes is a cornerback compared to Gilman playing his safety position but with Kristian Fulton having inconsistency issues, they could bring him in on some drives down the stretch. Derwin James is still the lead man but Jim Harbaugh could take a chance to see if he can bring out the best in Forbes.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are another team that is entering the rebuilding mode but they could start now by claiming Forbes. Jaycee Horn was the lone-man talent in the atrocious pass defense behind several journeymen this season. However, they brought in Stephon Gilmore for a visit this past offseason but a deal didn’t go through. Forbes is no Gilmore but they could construct him that way if they can give starting reps.
