Early Day One of Chargers Free Agency: Filled With Disappointment

March 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Chargers Day 1 Free Agency

It is day one of NFL free agency, and every team is doing everything they can to get back internal free agents and sign new ones. The Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of resources to get whomever they want, yet they have let free agency pass them by.

Early Day One of Chargers Free Agency: Filled With Disappointment

The Big (But Expected) Move: Khalil Mack Re-signs

The Chargers recently cut long-time EDGE Joey Bosa, knowing that they had to also re-sign Khalil Mack in free agency. They did the cut of Bosa with confidence, and it paid off, as Mack is back. The Buffalo product signed for 18 million dollars, fully guaranteed. The Chargers got the contract signed early on day one of free agency.

Having Mack return to this defense is crucial, as this EDGE room is lacking outside of him and the young star, Tuli Tuipolotu. The 34-year-old is coming off a six-sack pro bowl season and will bring back the veteran leadership, consistency and elite EDGE play to this Minter-led defense.

Still, upgrading this room is a real possibility and should be a priority.

Trusting In Jesse Minter: Chargers Sign Donte Jackson

A few hours into day one of the Chargers free agency period, they signed their first external free agent of the 2025 off-season, doing so with the former Steelers and Panthers Cornerback Donte Jackson. The 29-year-old signed with the Bolts for 2 years, 13 million dollars.

Free agent CB Donte Jackson and the Chargers have agreed on a 2-year deal for $13M in a deal negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus.

Jackson was drafted 55th overall in the 2018 draft after his impressive combine performance headlined by a 4.32 40-yard dash. Since being drafted, Jackson has been a starting NFL cornerback and is looking to revitalize his career with Minter, as in his past season with Pittsburgh, he is coming off his worst coverage grade season in his career, with a 45.1.

Minter has gotten plenty of veteran defensive backs and turned their season/careers around, whether it is Eli Apple in a pinch, Kristian Fulton, Marcus Maye and turning two fifth-round rookies into impending starters in 2025. Is Jackson the next successful reclamation project for Minter?

Veteran Center Returns to The Chargers: Bradley Bozeman

During the time of writing this, Bradley Bozeman returned to the Chargers for the 2025 season. The exact details are currently unknown, but it was reported that this is a multi-year deal. Bozeman was quite disappointing in 2024, leading to Chargers fans pushing back against the initial rumors of him re-signing with the Chargers during free agency.

If Bozeman is back as an unquestioned starter in 2025, roster-building concerns should arise, especially across the offensive line… for an offensive line-driven team. Hopefully, Zion Johnson’s move to Center could give some competition, coupled with more free agents and draft selections.

Special Teams Gets Some Love: JK Scott is Back

The last move thus far during this Chargers day one free agency period is the re-signing of Punter, JK Scott. The 6’6 Punter has been a topic of conversation for Chargers fans, as he is inconsistent with his distance.

However, special teams expert Alex Katson approves of his move, explaining that he is an above-average Punter who brings exactly what the Chargers need and want in their special teams room. Do the Chargers find another Punter after the 2025 NFL draft to give Scott more competition?
