Could The Cowboys Trade Former Pro Bowler After Week 2?

September 13, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Dallas Cowboys might find themselves in the trade market, and it could involve backup running back Miles Sanders at the right price. While he did sign a one-year deal with the Cowboys, they have the leverage in the talks if they desire to trade him for at least a late-round draft pick. Originally selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product made his debut in Week 1 against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, and even though he showed some flashes, including a huge run to get near the red zone, it doesn’t mean Dallas won’t consider a trade. Sanders was on pace to be an efficient, reliable backup, but the fumble where the Cowboys were supposed to score cost them in the end.

Dallas shouldn’t trade him based on one week’s performance, but if they should probably consider it if he continues to cost them games. With the matchup against the New York Giants, there shouldn’t be any excuse for why this running back room can’t succeed. With 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue, hopefully set to make his debut soon, he might emerge as the permanent starter over Javonte Williams. This means Sanders might not see much of the field as Williams and the veteran will likely share the snaps instead, which could be minimal.

Could The Cowboys Trade Former Pro Bowler Miles Sanders After Week 2? – 3 Potential Destinations

Possible Fits

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints had one of the deepest running back rooms in the league before releasing Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers. However, they’re sticking with Kendre Miller as head coach Kellen Moore feels it might be enough to supplement Alvin Kamara, but that might not be true. Even though Kamara is one of the most generational running backs that one has seen, he is aging, and three years from now, he could be slowing down. They don’t need to worry about Kamara having a bad season; he just needs a solid veteran presence to help reduce the snaps for him, so he can stay fresh for the postseason.

Sanders isn’t in his prime anymore, but he could alleviate the pressure.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens have an interesting running back situation here. With the way Keaton Mitchell is slowly developing, they might be better off getting some veteran insurance policy behind Derrick Henry. The team may have Justice Hill, but his size and agility are better in the dump-off passes and screen plays. With Sanders in the mix, Lamar Jackson could work with him and Henry in the same drive.

Los Angeles Chargers

However, the Los Angeles Chargers will be running the football more often than ever, led by quarterback Justin Herbert. The team has two bullets in their backfield unit between 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris. While Hassan Haskins is still adjusting to the league, they should be in the market for one more veteran in the backfield room to keep the unit afloat. Sanders won’t get all of the attention, but it gives Herbert another weapon in short down possessions.
