The New England Patriots brought in Stefon Diggs for a free agent visit, but the former All-Pro receiver left Foxboro without a contract. A former fifth-round pick, Diggs overcame his unremarkable draft capital to establish himself as one of the league’s best receivers. From 2018 to 2023, Diggs averaged 102 receptions for 1,254 yards and nine touchdowns per season while making four Pro Bowls and earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2020.
The Maryland product was on pace for a similarly successful season during his first year with the Houston Texans, recording 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns through eight games. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL and is currently working his way back to the field. The Patriots were the first team to bring Stefon Diggs in for a visit, but they probably won’t be the last. Entering his age-32 season, Diggs makes more sense for a contender, so teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers should sign him while he’s still available.
Chargers, Chiefs Should Target Stefon Diggs After Patriots Visit
The Kansas City Chiefs have two promising young receivers in Rashee Rice and 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy, but both players come with their fair share of question marks. Worthy had his moments as a rookie, but the jury is still out as to whether or not he can become a legitimate starting wide receiver. Rice, meanwhile, has already proven himself when healthy, but he’s coming off a serious knee injury and may have to serve a suspension for his role in last offseason’s car crash.
Patrick Mahomes could use another veteran option, especially since tight end Travis Kelce is slowing down in his old age. Perhaps Stefon Diggs isn’t making enough progress for the Patriots, or perhaps the wide receiver is using New England to spark interest across the league. Either way, the Chiefs should kick the tires on Diggs and see if he has anything left. The Chiefs have one of the most talented rosters in football, so they can survive if Diggs won’t be at full strength in Week 1. As long as he’s healthy in January, this team could push for another Super Bowl.
More Help For Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers made the playoffs last year despite having one of the worst offensive supporting casts in the league. While Jim Harbaugh’s squad fortified the interior offensive line and added running back Najee Harris, they still need more reliable pass-catchers. Second-round pick Ladd McConkey hit the ground running as a rookie, but Quentin Johnston isn’t made for a full-time role and the recently re-signed Mike Williams is coming off a disappointing season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Stefon Diggs may not be the safest signing in the world, but he carries plenty of upside. Los Angeles has a good roster, but they need more firepower to take down the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens. Even if Diggs isn’t the player he once was, the four-time Pro Bowler could be a solid second option behind McConkey in this passing attack.
