The former Chargers first-round pick is calling it a career at the age of 30. Mike Williams sustained another injury this spring that was going to need rehab.

To the great surprise of the fan base, Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams is retiring from the age of 30, per his agent Tory Dandy. Dandy notified the team of Williams decision on Wednesday night prior to the start of training camp.

Williams rejoined the Chargers this offseason after a tumultuous 2024 season that saw him spend stints with both the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. Originally drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2017 draft, Williams has been one of the most-productive receivers for the franchise this century, mainly playing second fiddle to Keenan Allen for most of the past decade.

On Wednesday, general manager Joe Hortiz told the media that Williams sustained an injury earlier this spring that was going to keep him from hitting the ground running in training camp. Now, it looks like the veteran is looking towards a new chapter of his life instead of continuing the long and winding road of rehab he’s grown to know all to well in recent years.

In seven years with the Bolts, Williams has career totals of 4,806 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns on 309 receptions. He was widely known as one of the best jump-ball specialists in the NFL and will undoubtedly go down as one of the best and most fun wideouts to ever wear the lightning bolt.
