Chargers Superstar Pushes Off Retirement, Could Join Chiefs, Panthers As Free Agent

January 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Khalil Mack Retirement

Los Angeles Chargers edge defender Khalil Mack said he would consider retirement following the team’s 32-12 season-ending loss to the Houston Texans. However, he only needed a few weeks to make a decision about his future. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the nine-time Pro Bowler will return for at least one more season in 2025, although it might not be with the Chargers.

Chances are, the Los Angeles Chargers would love to bring Khalil Mack back for one last season before retirement. Despite his advanced age, the former Defensive Player of the Year remained a dominant force last year, finishing the season with six sacks and a 90.2 PFF grade, the fifth-best mark in the league. However, the Chargers won’t be the only teams interested in his services, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers could make a run at him on the open market.

Khalil Mack Pushes Off Retirement, Could Leave Chargers For Chiefs, Panthers

The Kansas City Chiefs recorded eight sacks in their convincing victory over the Houston Texans, but that performance was not emblematic of their overall production throughout the regular season. The interior duo of Chris Jones and Tershawn Wharton are fantastic on passing downs, but this team needs another complementary edge defender.

Former first-round pick George Karlaftis is a good player coming off the best game of his career, but he can’t do it by himself. 2023 first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah looks like a bust and veteran Mike Danna is nothing more than an unremarkable journeyman. The Chiefs don’t have the highest salary cap in the league, but if Khalil Mack wants to hoist the Lombardi Trophy before retirement, he could take a discount and sign a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Rebuilding A Defense

The Carolina Panthers won’t be Super Bowl favorites in 2025, but the future is bright. Quarterback Bryce Young came alive down the stretch last year, the coaching staff is in place, and the offense has the pieces for sustained success. All that’s left to fix is the defense, and signing Khalil Mack could fix one of the biggest remaining issues on the team.

Carolina never found a proper replacement for Brian Burns, and his absence combined with the season-ending injury to Derrick Brown gave the Panthers the worst defensive line in football. Jadeveon Clowney and D.J. Wonnum are fine complementary players, but this team needs a legitimate pass rushing threat like Mack to spearhead the defense.

Nobody will blame Khalil Mack if he doesn’t want to sign with the Panthers before retirement. While the future is bright for this organization, Mack might only have one season left in his tank, and the Panthers still have work to do on their rebuild. However, if Mack is willing to help guide an up-and-coming roster, he’d be a perfect fit for this team. Nobody needs a player like Mack more than the Panthers, and he could play a pivtoal role in winning a weak NFC South.
