Chargers start training camp with minimal changes to offensive line, rotation to follow

The Chargers have started training camp with the presumed offensive line configuration that many hoped would be different by now.

The Chargers took the field on Thursday for the first training camp practice of the year and unsurprisingly many eyes were on the interior of the offensive line and how that group would look out of the gates.

Well, as we’ve come to assume, changes were minimal this offeason outside of the addition of right guard Mekhi Becton who will takeover for 2024 starter Trey Pipkins. Fairly early into the offseason, general manager Joe Hortiz told the public that left guard Zion Johnson would be getting the opportunity to play some center and possibly make that transition.

Through mandatory minicamps and OTAs, Johnson and 2024 starting center Bradley Bozaman have been rotating back and forth between left guard and center. That routine hasn’t changed with the start of camp, per head coach Jim Harbaugh.

On the first day, Bozeman and Johnson were both at their incumbent positions. Harbaugh told reporters that it will be a daily rotation with the two until they can figure out with confidence which player should play wear.

That’s obviously not what fans wanted from this offseason. They wanted an overhaul of the interior, with at least two new faces. The Chargers did add veteran and former Raiders starting center Andre James to the mix, but he’s seemingly been an afterthought and not in the real competition.

Maybe there is still a move to be made by the Chargers. Veteran Brandon Scherff and Will Hernandez are both still on the market and each would provide an immediate upgrade at left guard. As long as their available, it’s an option.

Time will tell, though, if the Chargers believe there’s room to get better ahead of the regular season.
