The Chargers have added another arm to their backfield, and it’s one that should be familiar to spring football.
Los Angeles signed quarterback Luis Perez, an alum of Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista. Perez went on to play at Southwestern College in Chula Vista before moving to Division II Texas A&M Commerce.
Perez is most notable for being one of the stars of spring football, whether in the AAF, XFL, USFL, or UFL. After signing with the Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2018, the 29-year-old has played for the Birmingham Iron (AAF), Eagles, Lions, Los Angeles Wildcats (XFL), New York Guardians (XFL), New Jersey Generals (USFL), Vegas Vipers (XFL), and Arlington Renegades (XFL and UFL). He also had a second stint with the Rams in 2022.
With Justin Herbert out for the time being with a plantar fascia injury that has him in a walking boot, the Chargers likely wanted to add an extra arm to even out the reps between Easton Stick, Max Duggan, undrafted rookie Casey Bauman, and Perez.
Despite his spring success, Perez has struggled to find a foothold in the NFL, but he worked out for the Chargers on Monday and now is the newest member of Jim Harbaugh’s squad.
