The Los Angeles Chargers or Carolina Panthers may steal bust Dolphins trade candidate quarterback Trey Lance. According to a report, the Dolphins are looking to add a veteran quarterback but the source says Miami could trade for Lance as Tua Tagovailoa‘s replacement. The Dolphins had plenty of offensive talent but none of them will excel since they’re starting Skylar Thompson so it’s no secret why a report believes Lance could land in Miami in a trade. Out of the available quarterbacks, Lance could probably provide the most upside despite having a rocky preseason.
Dallas seems to be moving with Dak Prescott as their immediate future starter no matter what after giving him a big contract extension. However, Lance fits with the Dolphin’s system since Mike McDaniel was his run game coordinator for the 49ers in 2021. McDaniel may be able to draw up a new offense to work in favor of Lance’s running abilities if nothing else works for him in the passing game. The Cowboys don’t need Lance necessarily since Cooper Rush is still on the depth chart so the team could get some type of draft in return.
To no one’s surprise, the Cowboys didn’t pick up Lance’s fifth-year contract so it makes sense for Dallas to field trade calls this season. However, Lance only has four games in starting experience so it might take a few snaps before he can adjust to Miami’s offense. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Cowboys trade him this season as long as Prescott stays healthy and performs like the team wants. Lance would probably beat out Thompson for the starting job and they wouldn’t have to take out so much for his services.

More Help For Justin Herbert
As long as Justin Herbert stays healthy this year then the Chargers don’t have much to worry about. However, Herbert was dealing with an injury this past preseason so that could always creep up at the worst situation. Jim Harbaugh should probably avoid this mishap by signing a reliable veteran or trade for a quarterback who can start immediately. Lance is that player to do so even though he hasn’t done anything special being a starter but it’s better than Easton Stick as their backup.
The former draft bust easily wins the job to backup Herbert so it gives the offense some life if their franchise quarterback ever goes down. Stick hasn’t won a single game since being a starter so it’s safe to roll the dice on trading for Lance for cheap to give the offense a fighting chance.
Trouble in Carolina?
Everything was going wrong in their week one blowout against the Saints. One of their hallmark players, Derrick Brown is out for the season so it’s easy to say their season is over. Bryce Young continues to underperform even though the Panthers spent the entire offseason getting a supporting cast for him. Carolina isn’t looking to extend Diontae Johnson so it may force Young to scramble out of the pocket with a weak offensive line to pass to at least Adam Thielen again.
The Panthers are holding their breath that no more injuries happen this season, especially if Young continues to underperform which could lead to disaster for him. Lance would probably be the right man to beat Andy Dalton for the job if Young ever goes down.
Other Potential Trade Destinations
New Orleans Saints
Things are looking bright for the Saints are their surprising blowout victory against the Panthers. No one expected that to happen considering the weapons Derek Carr had. However, the Saints are looking to see an improvement this year and if they’re experiencing another losing season, they could turn to trade for a quarterback. Rookie Spencer Rattler won’t be ready for that opportunity until he spends a couple of years learning the system.
Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore luckily brought back Tyler Huntley to provide support for Lamar Jackson. The Ravens wouldn’t have to worry about turning the switch on Jackson coming off back-to-back MVP seasons. However, he tends to suffer from a few injuries throughout the year so maybe betting on Lance to back Huntley would give him the championship experience he needs. Lance probably won’t beat Huntley for the backup job but he could get some opportunities if it comes down to the coaching staff wanting to try out both of them only if Jackson goes down with an injury.
