With NFL teams busy making a last-minute push to acquire the best players to help their teams in the long haul of the season, the Chargers got an upgrade at the OL position by acquiring Trevor Penning from the Saints.
This is the much-needed offensive line that the Chargers really desperately need. In exchange, the Chargers sent the Saints a 2027 sixth-round pick.
Trevor Penning provides the team flexibility as he spent the first two seasons of his career at left tackle before switching to right tackle in 2024. Trevor Penning could play anywhere the Chargers need him on the Offensive Line. With an already talented roster with Alt, Slater, Pipkins, and Becton, the Chargers’ OL got much better with the addition of Trevor Penning at the NFL trade deadline.
Though some critics have doubts about Penning, he is a solid offensive lineman that the Chargers got from the Saints. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman, and offensive line coach Mike Devlin all say that the trade deadline really helps boost the team going forward.
With the Chargers currently 6-3, the trade for Penning really helps the team remain in control of the AFC playoff race and the AFC West.
The trade also provides the team with more depth going forward, as they have more pieces to move if a player gets injured. The Chargers are hoping that the trade-deadline pickup will be the boost they need to win their first AFC West division title since 2009!
The Chargers are now much more talented on paper, and the trade for Penning at the trade deadline really shows that the team is going for it.
