Marcus Maye played the 2022 and 2023 season with the Saints before signing with the Dolphins earlier this year.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Chargers announced that they have claimed former Dolphins safety Marcus May off waivers following his recent release. In a corresponding move, the team has placed cornerback Eli Apple on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Maye played in 11 games this season for the Dolphins with three starts. He’s collected 30 total tackles with one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Last season, Maye started all seven games he played in for the Saints where he posted 37 tackles, two pass breakups, and two interception.
Since being drafted in the second round out of the University of Florida in 2017 by the New York Jets, Maye has career totals of 439 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 29 pass breakups, eight interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
The 6’0, 210-pound safety was likely brought in to help mitigate the potential loss of safety Alohi Gilman who was a non-participant to begin the week of practice. The Chargers are also now without safety AJ Finley who was waived and claimed by the Seahawks earlier this week.
