Breaking: Former NFL First Round Pick Could Be On The Trade Block

April 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Former first-round pick linebacker Devin Lloyd could be on the trade block during the NFL Draft as the Jacksonville Jaguars have no plans to pick up his fifth-year option. According to multiple reports, despite picking up Travon Walker’s option, it looks like the Jaguars are not doing the same with Lloyd, which could lead to speculation that a trade may be possible. The Jaguars are heading into the 2025 season with a new regime under head coach Liam Coen after firing Doug Pederson since sustaining a disastrous 2024 campaign. Coen had the chance to speak with reporters about the future of Lloyd, and they’re not looking to pick up his fifth-year extension, but they’re having conversations.

It’s hard to imagine the Jaguars keeping both former first-rounders Walker and Lloyd on the same roster, so either one of them will likely be on the trade block. Walker was in those conversations, but it looks like Lloyd might be the lone man in the talks, especially this upcoming draft. Originally selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Utah product spent the entirety with the Jaguars, earning a starting role after becoming the Defensive Rookie of the Month the same season while notching 24, six passes defensed and two interceptions. Lloyd hasn’t been the same explosive player since his first year, so the team will likely explore a potential trade this offseason to these three teams.

Three Possible Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

As much as the Los Angeles Chargers need a wide receiver on offense, they need some improvements for their defense. The team cutting Joey Bosa was the first step of finding another pass rusher, but they have been quiet in finding his replacement. Nobody loves playing in the trenches with a physical defense more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. However, it doesn’t look like that way since losing Poona Ford, who was arguably their best middle defensive lineman, but the team did re-sign Teair Tart.

He might not produce the same results this upcoming season since he’s been reliant on Ford to open the holes for veteran Khalil Mack to ram in the middle. He’s coming back, but it might not be the same for himself, too. The Chargers have enough cap space to facilitate a trade in the draft, and they should target Lloyd as a compensatory pick to fill the hole opposite of Mack.

Baltimore Ravens

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens had one of the worst pass-rushing units in the league, even though they were able to find some life. Jadeveon Clowney’s departure had a ripple effect on the team’s chemistry, and Trenton Simpson hasn’t been able to fill his shoes properly. While they could trade for him back, the Panthers might refuse to make that happen. Perhaps the Jaguars could be willing to trade Lloyd for a couple of draft picks since the Ravens are looking for an immediate answer.

Malik Harrison is leaving this offseason, too, for their rival, which isn’t the first former Raven to do that. If the Ravens want to win a championship next year, they should go all-in to find a capable pass rusher to replace Simpson and provide some stability for Kyle Van Noy and Roquan Smith. Lloyd might not be the final solution, but the Ravens aren’t losing anything since he’s still on a rookie deal.

Carolina Panthers

Meanwhile, the Panthers are finally improving it’s defense after focusing on rebuilding the offense for quarterback Bryce Young. However, veteran Jadeveon Clowney needs a capable opposite linebacker on the other side since Josey Jewell isn’t going to get things done. Tershawn Wharton’s signing is perfect for Derrick Brown, and now it’s time for the Panthers to trade for Lloyd to match up with Clowney.
