After just one season, the Los Angeles Chargers will cut running back Gus Edwards who now becomes another weapon on the market. According to a report, the release came as no surprise as the bust had one of the worst years with the team despite pairing with J.K. Dobbins. However, the Chargers are in dire need of a new running back and they could likely let Dobbins test the market next week and find a dependable upgrade now that the team has money to burn. Edwards probably won’t earn a starting role in the league anymore but he could carve out a backup job.
Originally selected as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers, the running agreed on a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens but plans fell through and became a practice squad member. However, the Ravens brought him back on the main roster in 2020 inking a two-year, $10 million extension deal but that also didn’t go as planned after missing the following season with an injury. Edwards tested the market last offseason to see if he could revive his career with Dobbins with the Chargers. He now finds himself in that same spot again and these five teams could give him a last chance in a backup role.

Next Possible Teams
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly in the market for a new running back as Kareem Hunt will hit free agency. Isiah Pacheco is still their starter but after his long-term injury, the Chiefs are waiting out this upcoming season whether to extend him or not. While Edwards won’t take Pacheco’s job, he could be a useful backup option to move the chains.
Baltimore Ravens
As the Ravens have other needs, the most overlooked position is the running back department even though Derrick Henry had a phenomenal one-year with the team. Keaton Mitchell made no impact in his return even though Justice Hill was on fire. Perhaps, the Ravens could reunite with Edwards in a situational role to pair with Hill as the reliable man to be ready for catches in screenplays to help quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Dallas Cowboys
According to reports, the Cowboys want to re-sign Rico Dowdle and pair him with a draft pick. However, they might be better off getting Edwards on a bargain one-year deal while they could bring back Dowdle. Edwards won’t start but he’s a better option as a third-man even if Dallas will draft a running back.
New Orleans Saints
After releasing Jamaal Williams, the New Orleans Saints should be in the market for some backup help for Alvin Kamara. The Saints unfortunately won’t have enough money for the best backup available on the market. Edwards could be brought in on a temporary cheap contract to serve as a reliable backup while Kendre Miller develops.
Carolina Panthers
2024 draft selection Jonathan Brooks will probably miss the next season with a brutal injury. Even after extending Chuba Hubbard, the Panthers need a backup while the team will cut veteran Miles Sanders. Edwards could be a decent backup for Carolina since Hubbard is still young and needs a veteran presence.
