While maintaining positive and seeing who has impressed during this first week of camp is important, it is also important to monitor individuals who are clearly falling down the depth chart.

Biggest Fallers During Chargers 2025 Training Camp
Written on July 24, before Chargers training camp practice took place on the same date.
Firm QB2 To Cut? – Taylor Heinicke
The Chargers traded for Taylor Heinicke by giving up a 2025 seventh-round pick, which the Falcons ended up using to draft intriguing offensive tackle Jack Nelson. That said, Heinicke was handed the QB2 spot as soon as he learned the Chargers offense, then in which allowed the Chargers to practically move on from Easton Stick as soon as they could.
Heinicke has plenty of starting of experience, with moments of brilliance in the playoffs. His attitude towards the game is obvious, and is shown by how well-liked he was in previous locker rooms. Thus, adding a playable, locker room centric guy who can also mentor Herbert is a bargain considering he was only moved for a seventh round selection.
Unfortunately, Heinicke has been somewhat sluggish during the early portion of the Chargers training camp cycle, as he has missed a few practices for personal reasons. This led to Chargers reclaimation project, Trey Lance to get a lot of snaps, now working with the second team offense at times.
Lance, a former Top-5 selection at QB, is still only 25 and possess immense physical tools. If Lance can work out for the Chargers, it would allow the Bolts to have a talented, valuable trade asset or a long-term backup who can run Greg Roman’s offense to perfection. It should also be noted that controversial rookie, DJ Uiagalelei has been apart of this battle as well, making strides from his not-so-illustrious collegiate career.
Overall, with Heinicke missing time coupled with being up-and-down during Chargers training camp, the door has become wide open for QB2, which could mean the losers of this now confirmed camp battle will be off the 53-man roster.
Faller Now, Riser Later – Junior Colson

Junior Colson’s first year and now second off-season is extremely familiar to Chargers second-year breakout linebacker, Daiyan Henley. Both Colson and Henley struggled with injury in their first season, then went into their second off-season buried on the depth chart waiting for an opportunity.
As it stands currently, Colson is stuck working with the second-team defense, playing alongside fellow standout LB, Troy Dye. This would place Colson either #3 or #4 on the depth chart, depending on how the team views Dye in comparison. Either way, the general takeaway is the Chargers third round selection from 2024 has yet to crack the first team defense.
It is not like his competition is Fred Warner, Colson simply needs to play better than the aforementioned Dye as well as beat out veteran Denzel Perryman for snaps with the first team. Perryman has been a long time fan favorite and starter in this league, but he is going into his age 32 season, and has never been a coverage backer, which should allow Colson to perfectly slide in and take coverage snaps with the first team, at the very least.
The future is still bright for the Chargers 2024 third round selection, as he did show some flashes in his first NFL season. You can couple this with his positive attitude, he tools to succeed in this league. Navarro Bowman, Colson’s position coach has even come out and said: “He’s done the extra. He’s dropped a few pounds, I think he’s moving a little better.”
All of this positive reinforcement, coupled with just seeing Henley have this exact same career arc until this point, should give Chargers fans some hope in Colson becoming much more than just one of fallers from Chargers training camp.
Chargers Training Camp Is Not Kind To Fourth Round Picks: Kyle Kennard & Justin Eboigbe
Fourth round selections have not yielded much success for Joe Hortiz in his first two drafts up until this point. Starting with Justin Eboigbe, who was drafted in 2024, he has yet to really make any real impact during this early portion of the Chargers training camp.
His stock was hopeful to rise due to his body composition becoming much more lean, with 15-20 lbs of muscle being added during the offseason. However, from early reports from multiple sources, Eboigbe is still working with the third team defense, allowing him to easily be classified as a early faller from Chargers training camp.
Things can and likely will change throughout camp once the pads come on but so far, the #Chargers are leaning on their more experienced players in the defensive tackle room.

Moving onto the Chargers 2025 fourth round selection, Kyle Kennard, the lack of attention speaks volumes. Kennard has yet to make any headline, any subsection, or really any line of text. He has been dead silent during camp thus far, and it is not like he is injured. He is out there practicing and seemingly not doing anything noteworthy.
This is concerning for a guy who the Chargers are likely going to be relying on quite a bit on special teams, with likely some defensive snaps as Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree are both over 30 years old. Hopefully, preseason and more padded practices will alow for these fourth round defensive linemen to really standout, removing the label as fallers from Chargers training camp.
