Donte Jackson, Los Angeles Chargers, Agree to Contract
Donte Jackson entered the 2024 offseason with the Carolina Panthers but soon joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in a one-for-one trade for wide receiver Diontae Johnson. In a rare lose-lose transaction, Jackson struggled in his new home. Starting and appearing in 15 games, the cornerback finished the season with five interceptions, eight passes defended, 38 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a 49.4 PFF grade, the 110th-best mark of 116 eligible players. With his help, the Steelers made the playoffs but went one-and-done against the Baltimore Ravens.
Jackson originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Selected by the Carolina Panthers, the LSU product immediately became a key part of the defense. Starting in all 16 games, the rookie finished his inaugural season with four interceptions, nine passes defended, one sack, 74 tackles, and four tackles-for-loss.
Donte Jackson continued to grow and earned a three-year contract extension in March of 2022. Paired with former first-round pick Jaycee Horn, Carolina had one of the league’s better cornerback duos in the league. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to just nine games as the Panthers missed the playoffs with quarterback Sam Darnold. During his limited time on the field, Jackson recorded two interceptions, 35 tackles, and one tackle-for-loss.
The cornerback remained healthy for the following season but couldn’t help the Carolina Panthers win games. While he finished with a respectable 64.3 PFF grade, the team finished with the worst record in football.
Since signing his rookie contract, Donte Jackson has appeared in 95 games while making 91 starts. While on the field, the LSU product has recorded 19 interceptions, 54 passes defended, one sack, 341 tackles, 17 tackles-for-loss, and one quarterback hit.
