3,800-Yard Giants Free Agent Looking for Bigger Role – Chargers, Panthers Could Intervene to Provide the Opportunity

January 20, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

darius slayton bigger role

Giants impending free agent wide receiver Darius Slayton is looking for a bigger role next season no matter where he lands. According to a source, the wideout believes he is capable of receiving extra workload despite any uniform he is wearing in the Fall. The NFL Free Agency is still a couple of weeks while the postseason is still underway, but it’s never a bad time for most teams that are in the playoffs to start thinking about the market. Slayton does not rule out a return to the Giants but the team may see him leave this free agency since considering he will have heavy interest from several teams.

Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Auburn product has been a solid contributor despite the lackluster of the Giants offense. Head Coach Brian Daboll may never get Slayton’s true talents out in New York which makes sense why he wants to leave the team in the first place. He was the subject of trade rumors this past 2024 campaign but Slayton could finally find a new home at the right price for his appreciation in the lineup. Slayton feels like the Giants don’t use him to their leverage enough to win ball games but with a depleting quarterback situation since benching former starter Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito.

Despite that, the 28-year-old was able to top more than 700 yards and four touchdowns in 2023 which could increase with the right roster. The Chargers, Panthers may be the best fits to bring out the best of his abilities.

More Talent for Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers have a new regime under head coach Jim Harbaugh but the team didn’t have enough talent to get past the wild-card round. Quarterback Justin Herbert is one of the better throwers in the league but Harbaugh admits the team could have prepared him for a different outcome and that could be very well true since the only consistent wide receiver out there was rookie Ladd McConkey. Second-year Quentin Johnston was looking like his old rookie self while Joshua Palmer had a few bright spots but it didn’t help Herbert succeed in his passing game.

However, since Palmer will become a free agent this March, they should probably consider trading Johnston while he’s on a rookie deal. The good news is that the Chargers have plenty of salary cap to work with to land a couple of superstar talent so they might not have an excuse. Harbaugh can not be reluctant to the passing game by focusing on the ground for Herbert. Slayton might not be a Davante Adams or Cooper Kupp but he could ensure to move the chains in the deep passes when targeted.

Having Faith in Young

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers will head into yet another offseason hoping to rebuild a new offense for quarterback Bryce Young. They have their faith in him while Andy Dalton will likely head to a new team next season. After trading Diontae Johnson and Jonathan Mingo, the Panthers will find themselves in the market for a wide receiver. Rookie Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker are two capable wideouts but it’s not enough to drive this team into the postseason.

Slayton may not care where he lands as long he the main target for a roster. If any team can give him the ball often down the field, it’s Bryce Young. He could fit into this system considering the Panthers need a new WR1 since Legette and Coker are still adjusting to the league.
