Chip Kelly’s sudden departure left UCLA in a tough spot this late in the offseason. And yet, the athletic department responded quickly by promoting longtime assistant DeShaun Foster.
Foster, a former NFL running back, has been part of UCLA’s staff since 2017. He’s been coaching the school’s running backs for the past seven years.
When the hire was first announced, UCLA fans started wondering if there would be a mass exodus. While we can’t definitively answer that yet, it sounds like quarterback Ethan Garbers is staying loyal to the program.
Moments ago, Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times reported that Garbers is expected to remain at UCLA for the 2024 season.
Bolch wrote, “Ethan Garbers said he expected the whole team to stay together, no transfers.”
Garbers had an efficient 2023 season with the Bruins, completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,136 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also had 127 rushing yards on 35 attempts.
With Garbers expected to return for the 2024 season, UCLA’s staff should feel a bit more comfortable about its quarterback situation.
UCLA averaged 26.5 points per game this past season while averaging 427.1 yards of offense each week. It’ll be fascinating to see how the offense performs now that Kelly is no longer in charge.
