At least one prominent head coach is not a fan of college football’s new clock rule.
UCLA’s Chip Kelly took a shot at the NCAA and television networks during a halftime interview on Saturday night.
Kelly’s beef was centered around the change implemented for 2023, which calls for the clock to continue to run following first downs except in the final two minutes of each half.
“This new rule is…that’s crazy. We had four drives in the first half. This game goes fast. I hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials,” Kelly said.

The new rule is resulting in shorter game times, but it’s also reducing the total number of plays teams can run, which is something an offensive-minded coach like Kelly clearly isn’t happy about.
UCLA led Coastal Carolina 14-6 at halftime when Kelly gave this interview. The Bruins wound up pulling away and winning 27-13, led by two touchdown passes from true freshman quarterback Dante Moore.
The 27 points were the least UCLA has scored in a game since a 44-24 loss to Utah on Oct. 30, 2021.
