USC’s 2023 regular season officially wrapped up today in disappointing fashion as they fell 38-20 against arch-rival UCLA. As the team heads into a new future in the Big Ten, Dan Mullen wonders if head coach Lincoln Riley should follow them there.
Taking to X after the game, Mullen suggested that the wrong LA-based college football head coach is on the hot seat, no doubt referring to UCLA’s embattled head coach Chip Kelly. That’s a pretty thinly-veiled shot at Riley.
“Are we sure that they have the right coach on the hot seat in LA,” Mullen wrote.
Mullen’s post has gone viral with over 250,000 views, 1,700 likes and over 500 shares in just half an hour.
Fans can’t help but find themselves in agreement with Mullen here:

“Chip definitely should be on the hot seat, but correct that Riley should be too (if it weren’t for the buyout),” one user replied.
“Chip gonna go 8-4 with Ethan Garbers while Lincoln goes 7-5 with Caleb Williams. UCLA goes into Riley’s house and completely embarrasses his team,” another wrote.
“Looking at USC’s schedule next year, they might not even make a bowl game,” a third mused.
USC’s fall from a top five team to one that will probably wind up playing in the Independence Bowl or something similar has to be among the worst collapses for a college football team in recent memory.
