Weekly Sparks Players Grades: A team struggling to stack wins

May 29, 2025 by Silver Screen And Roll

Chigaco Sky v Los Angeles Sparks

With the Sparks losing three of their last four games, this young team is struggling to put together complete performances.

It’s been a rough week for Sparks basketball.

They’ve lost three of their last four games, only beating the winless Chicago Sky on Sunday.

While each defeat has its explanation, the lack of offensive production has been a constant for the 2025 Sparks. They are averaging 81.8 points per game, which is middle of the pack in the WNBA.

Against the Golden State Valkyries, the Sparks managed just 73 points, their lowest scoring output of this early season.

In their loss to the Dream on Tuesday, they scored only 31 points in the first half. L.A. never came back in that contest and are now 2-4 on the season.

While the losses are accumulating, certain players are standing out positively.

So, let’s grade this week’s performances. As always, grades are based on expectations for each player. A “B” grade represents the average performance for that player.

Kelsey Plum

37.5 minutes, 24 points, 2.3 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 2.5 steals, 0.3 blocks, 32-75 FG, 16-38 3PT, 16-21 FT, +12

Plum continues to be the engine that drives the Sparks.

Whenever a basket is needed, she answers the call and delivers. She is leading the team in points scored, minutes played and assists.

Los Angeles is still very much a work in progress, but with Plum in the backcourt, they finally got the guard they’ve been searching for to lead this franchise.

Grade: A

Dearica Hamby

34.5 minutes, 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2.8 steals, 1 block 28-55 FG, 4-9 3PT, 18-27 FT, +16

Hamby had another solid slate of games this week, but her rebounding took a slight dip. She wasn’t as strong on the glass as players like Azurá Stevens stepped up in their rebounding duties.

Mama D meant business.

Overall, it feels like the chemistry between Plum and Hamby is still in the development stage. Once those two begin working well together, they’ll be one of the best duos in the WNBA.

Grade: B

Azurá Stevens

30.3 minutes, 15.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.8 blocks, 22-43 FG, 6-12 3PT, 13-14 FT, +20

Stevens is off to the best start in her career. She averaged a double double this week and was red hot from deep, going 50% from 3-point range.

This level of production from Stevens is unprecedented. If she can keep it up, it’ll give the Sparks another player they can go to on the perimeter.

Let’s hope she can keep it up.

Grade: A+

Odyssey Sims

27.8 minutes, 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 0.8 steals, 11-32 FG, 6-13 3PT, 8-12 FT, +6

Sims had a pair of good scoring games against the Valkyries and the Sky. When she gets going and finds a rhythm offensively, she is one of the best scorers on the roster.

Consistency from Sims will be needed, though, if she continues playing this much throughout the entire season.

Grade: B+

Sarah Ashlee Barker

25.5 minutes, 5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.8 steals, 0.3 blocks, 6-23 FG, 3-14 3PT, 5-6 FT, -1

As a rookie, Barker playing this much is less than ideal. She can’t play this many minutes and be an effective player. Her shooting numbers are poor, she is having trouble defending at the WNBA level and is struggling to make a positive impact for the team.

There isn’t anything to be concerned about at the moment. Barker needs to play less until she finds her footing in the league. With Rickea Jackson now back after missing games due to concussion protocols, hopefully, Barker can be given a more appropriate workload for a rookie.

Grade: C-

Julie Allemand

15 minutes, 3.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.8 steals, 4-11 FG, 3-9 3PT, 2-2 FT, -23

Allemand made her season debut against the Phoenix Mercury last week and she’s been a solid backup guard. She’s coming back from a left-hand injury, so Allemand likely needs some time to get back into game shape.

Grade: C-

Liatu King

11.2 minutes, 2.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.3 steals, 5-9 FG, 0-2 3PT, 0-1 FT, -1

Now that she’s back with the Sparks on a hardship contract, King is playing a couple of shifts per game.

The Los Angeles Sparks have signed Liatu King to a rest-of-season hardship contract. The Sparks’ third-round draft pick finished as a semifinalist for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award as a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. King will wear No. 4 for the…

So far, she’s been a respectable player and is earning some run and shooting well from the field. There isn’t much more one should be asking for from a rookie who’s in her situation.

Grade: C

Mercedes Russell, Rickea Jackson, Emma Canon, Sania Feagin

These four players clocked less than ten minutes per game, so they will not be getting graded this week.

Technically, Jackson averaged 12 minutes but only played in one game since she missed the other three due to concussion protocols.

So, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to grade her for one game where she was still playing limited minutes.

Lynne Roberts

With the Sparks at 2-4, Roberts has done her best as head coach to navigate injuries and put the team in a position to win.

The offensive issues are something to keep an eye on as the year progresses, but for now, she’s doing a good job with her rotations. Minus a couple of questionable challenges, Roberts has been a positive for the Sparks.

Grade: B-
