Luka Doncic is officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers pulled off what many spectators considered a grand heist by acquiring Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. They sent Anthony Davis back in a three-team deal for the 25-year-old superstar.
On Sunday afternoon, the Lakers confirmed the news in a social media post welcoming Doncic. In the photo, he’s wearing a yellow jersey with the number 77.
“Yes, it really happened,” the Lakers wrote. “Welcome to Los Angeles, Luka.”
The Lakers followed up with another post declaring that “No. 77 has arrived.” Doncic will keep the same jersey number he wore for six-plus seasons in Dallas.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin noted that Doncic will become the first Lakers player to ever wear No. 77. Courtesy of McMenamin, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka released a statement following the bombshell acquisition.
“Luka is a one-of-a-kind, young global superstar who will lead this franchise for years to come,” Pelinka said. “His killer instincts and commitment to winning championships will be a driving force for the team. We will be relentless in building a roster around the on-court vision Coach [JJ] Redick has for this basketball team, and there is an unwavering commitment to that work to serve our loyal and dedicated fans. We are grateful for today and look forward to what’s next.”
Pelinka is also “overwhelmingly grateful” for Davis’ tenure with the Lakers, which included a championship win in 2020.Â
“Sports are about transformative moments,” Pelinka said. “We are inspired by these moments Lakers fan know, expect, and love with a franchise that continually ushers in new eras of greatness.”
On Sunday evening, Doncic posted a heartfelt letter to Mavericks fans on social media.
“Seven years ago, I came here as a teenager to pursue my dream of playing basketball at the highest level,” Doncic said. “I thought I’d spend my career here and I wanted so badly to bring you a championship. The love and support you all have given is more than I could have ever dreamed of.”
Doncic wrote that Dallas will “always feel like a home away from home.”
“Dallas is a special place, and Mavs fans are special fans.”
