Sparks give latest update on Cameron Brink injury, and it’s a good one

Cameron Brink is nearing a return, and Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts is hoping she’s back by the end of July.

The Sparks have had only Cameron Brink listed on their injury report for the past three games. Soon, they could have a completely healthy team.

On Saturday, Brink was seen doing a personal practice session with the team’s male practice players. Afterwards, head coach Lynne Roberts indicated she was hopeful that Brink would be back by the end of July.

Brink hasn’t played a WNBA game in nearly a year. She tore her ACL during a contest against the Connecticut Sun last June.

Since then, Brink’s been rehabbing the injury. During the WNBA Draft, host Holly Rowe of ESPN stated that Brink was expected to return to the Sparks in June.

However, when she began doing on-court work in June, Roberts said Brink had no timetable for a return. Now, there’s hope she’ll be back before July is finished.

Brink returning to the court for L.A. would be a massive win for the Sparks.

During her 12-game rookie season, Brink was already establishing herself as an elite defender, averaging 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game.

Offensively, she was also beginning to put things together. She had a season-high 21 points against the Dallas Wings, going 7-12 from the field in her 24 minutes of play.

Considering that Brink is regarded as one of the young cornerstones of the franchise, the sooner she gets back, the better.

She’ll understandably need time to adjust and return to form, but with the Sparks sitting at 6-14, they need all the help they can get.

Brink, even in a limited state, would be an automatic starter on this roster and gives the team some much-needed size and defensive prowess.

If the Sparks can keep the rest of the roster intact, then Roberts will have everyone healthy and available for the second half of the year.

For far too many games this season, the Sparks have had key players like Kelsey Plum, Rickea Jackson, Odyssey Sims, and Rae Burrell miss time.

When Brink returns, we can finally see just how good this Sparks team can be.
