Report: LeBron James did not ask for a contract extension with Lakers

When it comes to what the future holds for LeBron James with the Lakers, both sides seem just fine committing to only what’s left on the contract.

LeBron James and his current status with the Lakers has been a topic of conversation that has permeated the summer.

With this being the NBA offseason, we have slowly gotten morsels of knowledge on what, if any, contract conversations occurred between the 40-year-old superstar and the Los Angeles franchise.

We do know LeBron opted into the final year of his deal. Traditionally, when LeBron reached the end of his contract with the Lakers and even the Cavs, he’d sign a two-year deal, typically with a player option.

So, why didn’t he this time? Is it because he is planning a retirement? Did the Lakers talk to him about years beyond the 2025-26 season? Does LeBron even want to be here anymore beyond 2026?

More will be known once the media has a chance to speak with LeBron and President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka during the season. In the meantime, James’ agent Rich Paul has been more than willing to talk about James and what has or hasn’t happened this offseason.

Paul talked to Dave McMenamin of ESPN and made it known that LeBron never asked for a contract extension and that James has no plans of asking for a trade.

So, what does this mean? For the time being, LeBron is a Laker.

It doesn’t sound like the Lakers were pushing to secure James for more seasons, and if the feeling is mutual, then the end might be near, one way or another.

Obviously, this is an ongoing situation, but if you have plans to watch James play in 2026-27, you might want to push that forward for this year. The 2025-26 season is all we definitely have with LeBron. Given his age, potential dissatisfaction with the roster and being in a contract year, he has plenty of options and things to think about.

Lakers fans have had LeBron on their team for seven years. When he steps on the floor for Year 8, it will be the longest time he’s been with the same team in one stint.

Considering this upcoming season will also make LeBron the player with the most years in the league, that’s a pretty incredible partnership.

However, all good things must come to an end. With James being the longest tenured player in NBA history, that has always felt more theoretical than literal.

His last dance is fast approaching, and the Lakers can hear the music fading out. Soon, James will have to decide if he stays for another song, leaves the dance floor, or finds a new partner.

Currently, both parties are together for another year, but for the first time, the future is unknown and it seems each side is fine with it being that way. Let’s see if the fans and media alike can handle that.
