Fans may not wait long to see Bronny James make his NBA debut alongside his dad.
The Los Angeles Lakers can make history when opening their season against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. Bronny and LeBron James would become the NBA’s first father and son to play together as teammates. While the second-round rookie isn’t ensured big minutes in J.J. Redick’s rotation, he could reportedly see the floor quickly.
Appearing on Tuesday’s SportsCenter, ESPN insider Shams Charania called it “very likely” that Bronny will play in the Lakers’ opener.
“The Lakers plan that LeBron James, Bronny James make history as the first father-son duo to be on the court at the same time, and likely to come early in the game as long as it’s competitive and it’s a flowing game,” Charania said, according to Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells.
Charania said the Lakers “have spent a lot of time” discussing the historic moment and want it to happen in a “competitive environment.”
Charania’s new coworker, Brian Windhorst, shared a similar sentiment on Get Up. He felt the Lakers “showed their hand” with news of Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr., MLB’s first father-son teammates, attending Tuesday’s game as Nike guests.
“This is a big thing for LeBron. I would expect, as long as the game is going OK, be in your seats at the start of the second quarter,” Windhorst advised. “That’s when J.J. Redick did this in the preseason.”
Redick hasn’t disclosed his plans for Bronny, but Windhorst added that the first-year head coach is “totally leaning into” the significance of LeBron and Bronny sharing the court. LeBron has spent years discussing his desire to play alongside his oldest son.
“He understands how this moment is energizing LeBron, and energizing LeBron is good for the Lakers.”
The Lakers will host the Timerbwolves on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on TNT.
