Despite a more resilient effort from the Lakers this go around, they lose their second preseason game to the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center.
The Lakers looked like they shook off a bit of rust from Friday’s preseason debut. Now without Austin Reaves, totaling three missing starters, we mostly saw L.A.’s bench rotation matched up with Golden State’s full starting lineup.
The Lakers got off to a quick 7-0 start. Deandre Ayton started with a couple of midrange jumpers, then Jarred Vanderbilt’s energy and defense earned him a steal that led to a Gabe Vincent fastbreak three-pointer.
Moses Moody was Golden State’s leading scorer, putting up 19 points on 7-9 shooting. Stephen Curry had himself 14 points in 15 minutes on 5-7 shooting.
The Lakers’ Team Leaders
Vincent led the way for the Lakers, scoring 16 points, 5 assists and 3-7 from three in 19 minutes. Jarred Vanderbilt put on a very productive performance, doing a little bit of everything. He scored 9 points with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in 21 minutes.
Ayton continues to go after the boards and made his mark on the defensive end with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jaxson Hayes pitched in with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Dalton Knecht, while shooting 3-11, still poured in 12 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Newcomer Jake LaRavia added 10 points on 5-10 shooting, showcasing his ability to create his own looks.
Coach JJ Redick assessed the team’s competitiveness and overall performance in the postgame interview:
“Much better. Part of what we’re trying to do is do it consistently over and over and over. We played about 38 minutes of good basketball. The end of that first half, 2nd quarter, they [Warriors] finish on a 10-0 run and then I’m not sure what was going on at the start of the 3rd quarter. But outside of that, those two stretches, I thought we played much better.”
The Lakers will get a week off and their next game will be a rematch against the Warriors on Sunday, October 12th at 6:30 p.m. PT at Crypto.Com Arena.
