Reigning NBA Finals MVP Nikola Jokic is hoping to steal the show against the Los Angeles Lakers tonight. And if he can’t dominate on the court, he might settle for stealing the moon.
Ahead of tonight’s game at Ball Arena, the Denver Nuggets megastar arrived wearing a black track jacket and a scarf that had black and white stripes. Jokic immediately reminded fans – and the team – of the character Gru from the Despicable Me series.
If you’re familiar with the original movie, Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) is a supervillain who’s evil plan is to “steal the moon.” Naturally, the Nuggets and many others decided to have some fun with that:
“Going to play basketball or going to steal the moon?” the team wrote.
The fit is undoubtedly in response to an ongoing meme that Jokic already looks like the character even without the outfit. Jokic even did a promo for the upcoming Despicable Me 4 movie making fun of himself over it.
Some fans believe that Jokic is going to dominate after wearing that outfit while others believe it’s a sign that he’s about to fall flat against the Lakers.
“unhealthy amount of my mental health banking on the guy dressed like gru,” one user wrote.
“I don’t quite know how to explain how ready Nikola Jokic is for this playoff run except to point to him dressing up as Gru right before the Lakers rematch. He is READY ready, so I hope the Lakers are,” another user declared.
“Jokic showing up dressed as Gru has eased my nerves considerably,” wrote a third.
